Women’s Tennis Plays Arizona State Tough in 5-2 Defeat

TEMPE, Ariz. (January 19, 2020) – Northern Arizona women's tennis senior Chiara Tomasetti emerged victorious in a matchup of nationally-ranked players at No. 1 singles, but Arizona State claimed a 5-2 win on Sunday. The Lumberjacks dropped their first dual match of the season, despite playing the Sun Devils tough in doubles action and picking up a pair of wins in singles play.

"We had a good day overall," said head coach Ewa Bogusz. "Even though we lost, it was a good teaching moment for us and also a good indication of where we are at the start of the dual season. We put up a fight, were able to come out on top in two singles matches and doubles was very close. We are definitely heading in the right direction."

NAU put itself in a position to win the doubles point with close matches at No. 2 and No. 3. After Arizona State picked up a win on court one, the Lumberjacks' second and third pairings pushed the Sun Devils.

At No. 1 doubles, two nationally-ranked pairs squared off with the Sun Devils' No. 38 ranked team of Tereza Kolarova and Ilze Hattingh defeating the Lumberjacks' No. 25 ranked duo of sophomore Adrianna Sosnowska and freshman Mimi Bland, 6-2.

The Lumberjacks, needing to win both of the remaining doubles matches, played the Sun Devils close before Arizona State won on at No. 3 by a 7-5 score. Tomasetti and junior Ellie Millard were tied at 6-6 at No. 2 doubles when the doubles point was clinched.

The Sun Devils won at No. 2 and No. 6 singles before Tomasetti knocked off Hattingh at No. 1 to put the 'Jacks on the scoreboard. Tomasetti, ranked No. 57 nationally, controlled Hattingh, ranked No. 41, on her way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Tomasetti's win made it a 3-1 team score, but Arizona State clinched the match with a win at No. 5. The Sun Devils added a win at No. 3 before sophomore Emilie Haakansson pulled out a hard-fought three-set win at No. 4 singles.

Haakansson dropped the first set in a tiebreak to Arizona State's Cali Jankowski, but rebounded to win the second set to force a deciding third-set 10-point tiebreaker. Haakansson successfully completed the comeback and ultimately earned a 6-7(6), 6-4, 1-0(9) victory.

NAU will take a couple of weeks off before the 'Jacks take on Arizona in Tucson on Friday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m.
