DAY ONE RESULTS (PDF)

TUCSON, Ariz. (Jan. 2, 2020) –
Northern Arizona University swimming and diving completed its first day in the double dual meet against No.22 Arizona and No.25 Northwestern. The 'Jacks fell to both teams, scoring 58-106 to Arizona and 37-129 to Northwestern.

"It was a cold day to be in the pool," head coach Andy Johns said. "But despite the weather and tough competition, we had some pretty decent swims."

Even with the strong opposition, Elisa Rodriguez, NAU's swimming record holder in the both 50 and 100 freestyle, took first overall in the 100 freestyle race against Northwestern and Arizona, timing in at 50.89. Although it is not Rodriguez's all-time fastest time for the 100 freestyle (48.90), the 50.89 time marks her highest season record thus far.

Rodriguez was not the only one who found triumph today in the water. Maddie Seidl, in the 200 butterfly, took first place to Arizona and third to Northwestern, hitting the pad at 2:06.98.

The 'Jacks continued their success in the 1650 freestyle, when Astrid Villeda came in second to Northwestern and third to Arizona, clocking in at 17:23.09. Overall, she placed fourth.

"Astrid posted her season best time in the mile," Johns said. "She swam faster than she did in Las Cruces (17.28.66), which is really good for her."

As for personal records, Sarah O'Connor also broke her previous time 100 freestyle today. Previously, her fastest was 54.03 (2017), but found herself clocking in at 53.75.

Against Arizona on the 3-meter board, Jenny Cheetham took first cranking out a 252.90 point finals score, with Emily Luberto being close behind in second with 238.80.  Emily Sharrer took fourth, scoring 227.30 points, just ten behind Arizona's diver. To Northwestern, Cheetham took third, Luberto took fourth, and Sharrer took sixth.

"We have another day and set of events tomorrow, and I think we might be better suited for those events," Johns said. "It's good to race against really good competition and helps us prepare for the end of the year. We're excited to see what tomorrow brings."

The double dual meet will continue at 12 p.m. and include the 200 medley relay, 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 400 IM, 50 freestyle, and lastly, the 400 freestyle relay.
