TUCSON, Ariz. (Jan. 3, 2020) – Northern Arizona University's swimming and diving completed its two-day double dual meet against No.22 Arizona and No. 25 Northwestern University, completing an 86-255 finish to Northwestern and 120-226 tally to Arizona. Despite the losses, the Lumberjacks found multiple first place wins.
Elisa Rodriguez once again bested both Arizona and Northwestern in her 50 freestyle, swimming into first overall at 23.49. Yesterday, Rodriguez finished in first overall in the 100 free with a time of 51.04. In conjunction with her solo swims, she swam the last leg in the 400 freestyle relay to help her team of
Miranda Nichols,
Katy Smith and
Erin Spielman place second to Northwestern (fifth overall) at 3:37.61.
Finishing her 200 breaststroke at 2:21.76,
Haley Mayhew also took reign of a first-place finish against Arizona and third overall.
At 4:33.15 in the 400 IM, another current NAU record holder,
Niamh McDonagh finished second to Northwestern, third to Arizona.
Keeley Vardeman also did well in the 400 IM, tapping in at 4:40.50. Vardeman placed sixth overall, but third to Northwestern, just behind McDonagh.
On the 1-meter platform, the divers swept Arizona, taking first, second and third place.
Emily Sharrer took home the gold against Arizona (second overall) with a finals score of 258.65.
Jenny Cheetham was just behind her, scoring at 256.25 (third overall). For third to Arizona and sixth overall,
Emily Luberto scored 221.65.
The divers will be back for the three-day UCLA diving invite beginning on Jan. 17 in Los Angeles, Calif. In the meantime, the swimmers will head to St. George, Utah for a meet against the Dixie State University Trailblazers Sat., Jan. 18.
