LOGAN, Utah (February 16, 2020) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team capped their weekend road trip with their first win of the season, 5-2, versus Utah State on Sunday. After consecutive 4-3 losses, including Saturday versus BYU, NAU broke through in the win column to sit at 1-2 through its first four dual matches of the spring.
"I'm so pleased with how we carried ourselves today," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "Utah State is a strong opponent. They fight hard and it was a tough and well-fought win. The ladies have been playing awesome doubles and it pays off; it gives us a head start. We followed up in singles with some great performances. We played better than yesterday and it got us our first win of the season."
NAU gained the early advantage for the third straight match with the doubles point after picking up two brisk doubles victories at No. 1 and 2. Senior
Chiara Tomasetti and junior
Ellie Millard notched their third consecutive dominant doubles win, and remained undefeated in dual play, in a 6-1 decision versus Carolina Millan and Renata Lombera on court two.
Sophomore
Adrianna Sosnowska and freshman
Mimi Bland sealed up the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 against Sidnee Lavatai and Hannah Jones. At No. 3, sophomore
Emilie Haakansson and freshman
Elinor Beazley were one game away from a Lumberjack doubles sweep when the point was clinched. Moore and Roman led Gabrielle Dekkers and Zara Ryan, 5-3.
Unlike the previous two matches, NAU's doubles point led to a match win as the Lumberjacks won at No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 in singles.
Tomasetti's 6-1, 6-0 win on court one versus Lucy Octave provided the Lumberjacks a quick 2-0 lead in the match, but NAU's three remaining singles victories were battles.
Haakansson put the 'Jacks ahead, 3-0, with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 4 against Lombera before the Aggies got on the board with a three-set victory at No. 3. The Lumberjacks responded – and clinched the match – at No. 2 with Sosnowska defeating Dekkers in straight sets, 7-6(5), 7-6(8).
The two teams split the remaining singles matches at the bottom two spots in the lineup. Beazley earned her first collegiate dual victory at No. 5 as she rallied from a first set loss to knock off Annaliese County, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The Lumberjacks are back on the road for two more matches this upcoming week before their first homestand of the season at the end of the month. NAU will face Oregon – its third Pac-12 opponent this spring – on Saturday at 12 p.m. MST, followed by its Big Sky opener at Portland State next Sunday at 11 a.m. MST.
