Women’s Tennis Dominates Montana in Singles for 7-0 Shutout in Home Opener

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 27, 2020) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team fought through a tough doubles session and then proceeded to dominate Montana for a 7-0 home opening victory in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex on Thursday. The victory evened the Lumberjacks' overall record to 3-3 and pushed NAU's Big Sky mark to 2-0.

"It's great to be at home and the team feels great in our facility," said head coach Ewa Bogusz. "It showed especially in singles. We didn't play our greatest doubles today, but we were able to get the doubles point. We have some things to fix for Saturday, but overall great first win at home."

After six straight matches to open the season on the road, NAU settled in on its home court with six convincing singles victories. The singles dominance came after the Lumberjacks had to battle through a tough performance by the Grizzlies in doubles.

Sophomore Adrianna Sosnowska and freshman Mimi Bland's tiebreak win at No. 1 clinched the doubles point for the 'Jacks after the teams split the first two completed matches.

Sophomore Emilie Haakansson and freshman Elinor Beazley gave NAU the advantage with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 before Montana tied up doubles play with a 6-4 win at No. 2. That left Sosnowska and Bland to battle it out with Julia Ronney and Olivia Oosterbaan on court one. The Lumberjack duo found themselves down 6-5 before rallying for a 7-6(1) victory that sealed up the 1-0 match lead for the 'Jacks.

After picking up the doubles point, senior Chiara Tomasetti and Bland kept the NAU momentum going in singles with quick straight set wins at No. 1 and 5. Tomasetti notched her seventh consecutive straight set win of the spring, 6-1, 6-1, versus Ronney and Bland dispatched Bianca Bostrom, 6-1, 6-2.

Sosnowska clinched the home opening win for NAU at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Oosterbaan. From there, the Lumberjacks' final three singles wins came in succession with Haakansson, junior Ellie Millard and Beazley closing out their respective matches.

Haakansson bested Lauren Dunlap at No. 4 by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Despite falling behind 3-0 to start her match, Millard found her stride and never let up in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Maria Goheen at No. 3 and Beazley sealed up the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Claudia Reguant.

The 'Jacks will host New Mexico on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the first 50 fans attending the match receiving free breakfast burritos.
