LOGAN, Utah. (February 28, 2020) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team won its first match this weekend over Utah State, clinching a 4-2 victory over the Aggies.
"The guys showed great resilience today and I am very proud of the way how we bounced back after last week's match," head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "This team has character and it keeps showing it on the courts more and more. We need to recover and get ready for Utah tomorrow."
The match went quickly has the 'Jacks took the doubles point to get an early lead over USU. Doubles pair
Eban Straker-Meads and
Facundo Tumosa had the first victory 15 minutes into the start, winning 6-3 over Felipe Acosta and Javier Ruiz. Finishing second,
Chris Steele and
Daniel Dillon took a loss of 2-6. Flipping the score in favor of the 'Jacks,
Alex Groves and
David Nguyen clinched the critical doubles point, winning 6-5 over Sergiu Bucur and Arvid Hjalte.
Unfortunately, Utah State did not let the 'Jacks lead for long. Tumosa fell in his first singles set 0-6. To tie the score 1-1, Utah State's Bucur won in an ace point in his second singles set against Tumosa, finishing 3-6.
The Lumberjacks pulled ahead, earning their second point after Straker-Meads finished his games 6-4 and 6-0 against Acosta. NAU kept their lead winning on court three with Groves, despite his 2-6 loss in the first set. He went on to finish 6-2 and 6-3 against Ruiz.
In an attempt to tie again, Hlajte beat Steele on his singles court, going to three sets. Steele won the first set 6-2, but fell 4-6 in the last two sets for USU to earn their second point.
Clinching the match, Tripp won 6-4 and 6-2 over Christian Holmes, making this is the third time he has clinched a win for his team.
The Lumberjacks continue their play in the Beehive State, finishing up at the University of Utah tomorrow evening at 5 p.m.
