Celebration of Champions: 2020 NAU Men’s Indoor Track & Field

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 30, 2020) – The 2020 Northern Arizona men's indoor track & field season can be defined by the number one – achieving the first No. 1 national ranking in program history, earning the first National Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year awards in program history and of course, rising to the top of the Big Sky Conference yet again.

Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Mike Smith, who swept the Men's Coach of the Year awards for the Big Sky, Mountain Region and NCAA, guided the Lumberjack men to their 23rd all-time and ninth straight conference indoor championship in Pocatello, Idaho on Feb. 29. Behind five event wins, including individual victories by Abdihamid Nur (3000, 5000m), Luis Grijalva (mile) and William Beaudry (weight throw), the 'Jacks posted a winning total of 141.5 points, significantly in front of runner-up Idaho State's 89.5 points.

The Lumberjacks scored points across the board in the sprints and hurdles, throws, jumps, mid-distance and distance in their convincing championship effort. At the end of the season, NAU qualified seven runners for the NCAA Indoor Championships before the event's cancellation. Tyler Day, the National Men's Track Athlete of the Year, Luis Grijalva and Geordie Beamish were all double qualifiers to lead the school record contingent.

NAU held the No. 1 ranking in the country for two weeks and was slated to enter the national championships at No. 2. Grijalva (3000m) and Day (5000m) were ranked first in the country in their respective events.

The 2020 NAU men's indoor track & field team is the eighth and final feature in NAU Athletics' month-long Celebration of Champions. Be sure to follow the celebration on www.nauathletics.com and NAU Athletics on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

QUOTABLE
"The 2020 Men's Indoor season put our program amongst the names of the best teams in the nation with some performances that were not just historical in our program, but in the NCAA. I would give anything for our athletes to have the opportunity to finish their season at the NCAA Championships, but if that was not to be their last performance at the Big Sky Championships is a fitting way to remember this group. They dominated by competing for each other. This is a team that showed the nation what's possible at Northern Arizona University." – Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Mike Smith

2020 NAU MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD BY THE NUMBERS

23 The Lumberjacks' dominant championship performance in February earned them their 23rd all-time Big Sky Indoor Track & Field title. No other school in the Big Sky has won more than six indoor conference championships.
9 NAU's historical dominance is encapsulated by a single fact. The Lumberjacks have won nine consecutive Big Sky indoor titles, which is three more than Idaho State – which owns the second-most conference indoor championships with six – has won all-time going back to the inaugural championship meet in 1979.
19 The Lumberjack men had an astonishing 19 student-athletes score in at least one event at the Big Sky Championships. Ryan Raff scored in a team-high three events (mile, 3000m, 5000m).
12 Of those 19 student-athletes, 12 garnered all-conference honors in at least one event.
40 Luis Grijalva, Tuipala Koa, Theo Quax and Tyler Day shattered the Big Sky Indoor Championship record in the Distance Medley Relay set at the second-ever conference championship meet 40 years ago. Their time of 9:42.57 broke the previous record by more than 11 seconds.
8 Abdihamid Nur, the Big Sky's Freshman of the Year, became the eighth different Lumberjack male to win multiple events in the last eight years. He is the fourth Lumberjack to win both the 3000m and 5000m gold in the same year since 2013.
1 NAU earned the No. 1 ranking in the country in the USTFCCCA Rankings for the first time in program history on Feb. 17. The Lumberjacks held the top ranking for two weeks. The number one is also exemplified in being voted the best in the country, as Tyler Day and Mike Smith were at the conclusion of the season. Day and Smith were selected as the National Men's Track Athlete of the Year and National Men's Coach of the Year respectively, becoming the first individuals in program history to receive the honors. They were also the Mountain Region award winners in their respective categories.
7 NAU qualified a school record seven runners – Tyler Day, Geordie Beamish, Luis Grijalva, Blaise Ferro, Ryan Raff, Abdihamid Nur and Theo Quax – to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
3 Luis Grijalva, Geordie Beamish and Tyler Day put together a historic performance on Feb. 15 at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational. They finished first, third and fifth respectively in the 3000m run, which put them first, second and third respectively in the country this season and in the top 14 collegiately all-time.
33 Three weeks prior on the same track in Boston, Tyler Day made history by breaking the American collegiate record in the 5000m at the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic. His time of 13:16.95 was nearly 33 seconds faster than his previous personal-best and places him third all-time among collegiate runners.
