FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 29, 2022) - To start out the 2022 season, Northern Arizona Men's Tennis sweeps the Arizona Christian Firestorm 7-0 and 6-1, respectively through both matches of the day.
The 'Jacks started the day with a three court sweep in doubles play. Doubles pairs Dominik Buzonics and Alex Groves took the 6-4 win on court one, playing against ACU's Anthony Popyrin and Jonas Wand. NAU's Eban Straker-Meads and Daniel Dillon brought in the 6-4 win on court two against ACU's Jose Dominguez and Andres Vasquez. To complete the doubles sweep and earn NAU's first point, Chris Steele and Maciej Ziomber won their match on court three, 6-4, against ACU's Andre Millet and Martin Thomas.
Bringing the Lumberjacks their second point, Marcus Sulen earned the win on court six against Martin Thomas, (6-1, 6-0). Following Sulen, Alex Groves brought in another win for the Lumberjacks, finishing (6-0,6-1) on court five against Andres Vasquez. Ziomber went on to win his match on court 3, beating out Millet (6-3, 6-1).
Rounding out the rest of the first match of the day, Buzonics won his match, (6-2, 6-3), against Wand. Straker-Meads brought in the win on court one, finishing (6-3, 6-4) against Popyrin. Steele and Dominguez split the first two sets, (7-6, 4-6), and Steele battled back to win the third set tiebreaker, 10-6.
To begin the second matchup of the day, the 'Jacks showed out for another impressive three matches of doubles play. Buzonics and Groves brought the 'Jacks a 6-4 win to Popyrin and Millet. Dillon and Straker-Meads earned a 6-2 win on court two against Wand and Thomas. Ziomber and Steele brought in the third doubles win, 6-2, versus Vasquez and Dominguez.
The 'Jacks went 5-1 in singles play for the second round of the day. Groves finished first on court four, 6-1, 6-1, beating out Dominguez. Buzonics brought in a 6-2, 6-2 win against Popyrin. Joachim Shaefer saw his first action for the day in a 6-1, 7-5 win on court six against Nick Pries.
Freshman Dani Torres made his Lumberjack debut on court five, facing ACU's Vasquez. Torres fell 2-6 in the first set, and 3-6 in the second set. Finishing out the day for NAU Straker-Meads brought in another win on court one, getting the 6-4, 6-2 win against Millet, followed by one final win for the 'Jacks on court three. Ziomber secured the 6-4, 6-4 win against Wand.
"I thought it was a good start to the season, some good first matches. It's great to get some tennis under our belts and we had a great turnout for the morning match so we appreciate everybody coming out and supporting," Head Coach Maciej Bogusz said.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow for another double-header, as they host Western New Mexico University at 10 a.m. MST, and 2 p.m. MST. Tomorrow's matches are free to the public.
