FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (November 16, 2022) – Redshirt sophomore
Coleman Owen was one of 30 Northern Arizona University students to receive the Gold Axe Award at the Gold Axe and Distinguished Senior Awards Ceremony on Tuesday night.
The Gold Axe Award has been a symbol of recognition at NAU with the tradition dating back to 1933, a year after the student body adopted the axe as the symbol for university's athletics. Each semester, a select group of graduating seniors are presented with the award based on their outstanding achievements and distinguished service to NAU and the greater community.
A native of Gilbert, Ariz., Owen arrived at Northern Arizona University from Higley High School in the fall of 2019 is the Athletic Department's 60th Gold Axe recipient since 2004 and is the first member of the football team to earn the honor since November 2016.
While still just a sophomore by athletic eligibility due to a redshirt season in 2019 and the COVID-19 spring season in 2021, Owen held a cumulative 4.0 grade point average at the conclusion of the spring semester while majoring in finance. Owen has been named as a Big Sky All-Academic selection in 2020 and 2021, as well as receiving the Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete Award all three times he's been eligible.
In addition to his four seasons on the NAU football team, where he has earned All-Big Sky Conference and All-American honors, Owen has been an active participant with the Student Athlete Advising Committee as well as serving as a leader with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Owen has also volunteered within the community, helping fill sandbags to prevent flooding around Flagstaff and partnered with a local child to shop for school.
To be eligible for the Gold Axe Award, students must have completed at least 90 credit hours to apply for the award in their final undergraduate semester.
