FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 15, 2022) - The Lumberjacks claimed a record-breaking 11-0 win at home against Ottawa Thursday night.
Not only did the 'Jacks break the record for goals in a half (7), they went on to break the record for goals in a match as well. Five Lumberjacks scored two goals a piece, with four goals coming in just the first eleven minutes of play.
Maddie Shafer opened up scoring in the fourth minute of the match as the team settled into the game. Allison Veloz picked the ball up at midfield, dribbled down the right side of the field and sent a pass to Shafer just in front of the net, where Shafer capitalized and scored her second goal of the season.
Just over three minutes later, Shafer had her second of the night. Shafer stepped in to take a free kick about ten yards outside of Ottawa's box. Taking advantage of the good field position, Shafer sends a long boot straight into the top right corner of the goal.
Veloz found her own opportunity about forty seconds later off a quick pass from Abby Donathan. Donathan made her way into the right corner of the top of the box, shooting a fast pass to Veloz who was open up the middle, scoring her first career goal as a Lumberjack.
Dai Williams got in on the early goal scoring action in the 11th minute of the match, scoring her second of the season and first of the night. Veloz chased a pass into the right corner of the field, sending it into the box where the ball was tipped to Williams for the goal.
The 'Jacks quickly found themselves up with a 4-0 lead and still plenty of soccer left to be played.
In the 20th minute of the game, Rylie Curran created another opportunity for NAU off a free kick, just ahead of midfield. Curran shot the kick right into the box where Avery Ott jumped up and was able to get her head on in, scoring her first goal of the night.
NAU had two goals off the bench in tonight's match, both coming from junior Josie Novak. Novak's first goal of the night came in the 24th minute as the forward was able to trip up Ottawa defenders and put up a shot from outside of the box, ripping it to the back of the net for NAU's 6-0 lead.
The 'Jacks were awarded a corner kick in the 29th minute, which was taken by Shafer from the right corner. Shafer sent the pass into the box where both teams were crowding the goal, and Ott got her head on it, scoring her second of the match.
NAU headed into the half with seven goals, and still another 45 minutes to play as all eyes were on the previous record of 9 goals in a match.
The team picked right back up from where they started, as Jaylin Borden earned her first goal in an NAU uniform. Borden awaited Shafer's corner kick into the box, jumping up to get her head on it, scoring the Lumberjack's eighth goal of the match.
To tie the NAU record for most goals in a match, Williams followed suit with her second goal of the night coming just a minute and a half later. Williams took a pass up the middle from Grace Quinn, and moved around an Ottawa Defender, shooting from about five yards out of the box, hitting the top corner of the net.
Veloz, driving down the right of the field and cutting back into the middle, found her second of the night just thirty seconds after Williams to break the program record for goals in a match.
To make it 11-0, Novak pushed her second of the night in the 66th minute, once again from outside the box.
Trinity Corcoran started the match for the 'Jacks, playing all 90 minutes while recording five saves total. Corcoran earned her second shutout performance of the season.
The Lumberjacks will head on the road next week for a trip to California as the team closes out non-conference matches at Loyola Marymount and San Diego.
