NAU Track & Field Ready for Lumberjack Team Challenge

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 18, 2022) – The Northern Arizona University track & field teams are ready to continue the success of their season as they host their second home meet, the Lumberjack Team Challenge, this Friday.

Also competing at the meet will be Arizona Christian, Arizona State, Arizona Pole Vault Academy, Cal. State Fullerton, Cal. State Los Angeles, Utah Tech, Risen Performance, CSU Bakersfield, Evo Track Club, Sam Houston, UTSA, Guelph, Grand Canyon, Elite Sports Fitness Academy, UC Riverside, Valley Vipers, Southern Utah, and Arizona.

Last weekend the Lumberjacks saw four school records fall in a historic first home meet. David Dunlap broke both the 60-meter and 200-meter records, with his 200-meter time also setting a conference record. Alyssa Colbert broke her own 60-meter record, improving it by .02 seconds. Mitchell Effing impressed on the field side, breaking a long-held record in the triple jump.

More Jacks will see action this week, with the distance and relays squads submitting more entries into the meet. This will be the first meet of the season in which NAU will run the 4x400 meter relay.

Both Dunlap and Colbert will compete again in the sprinting events, joined by many other Big Sky standouts. For the women, LaTrouchka Duke and Kyairra Reigh will see time on the track after having impressive performances last week to begin their season. On the men's side, the Trenton and Tyson Givens will look to improve on their performances from last week, in which the brothers each made their way onto the top-10 all-time 60-meter hurdles list.

Multiple distance runners will start their seasons this week, with Brodey Hast and Santiago Gomez-Prosser being ones to watch on the men's side. Both Hasty and Prosser competed as part of the National Champion Cross Country team in the fall, with each finishing with All-American honors. For the women, Maggi Congdon and Annika Reiss will be looking to capitalize on their successful cross country seasons as they begin their indoor competition.

The throws squad will look very similar this week after they got off to an impressive start at the Axe 'Em Open. The event group had four new PRs, with two of them coming from sophomore tranfer Desmond Lott. Lott set new personal bests in both the shot put and weight throw in his first competition for NAU. Freshman Sariyah Horne-Kemp also had a strong start to her Lumberjack career as she threw a distance of 15.76 meters in the weight throw.

The jumps and multis group will be another one to watch this week, with school record holder Maddie Wilson competing in the 60-meter hurdles once again. Wilson, along with freshmen Gabbie Hasskamp and Olivia Conklin, will also compete in the shot put and high jump. Competing in the high jump on the men's side will be Jack Normand, who lept to a height of 2.04 meters last week.

The Lumberjack Team Challenge will begin at 2:00 p.m. MST, with races beginning at 4:00 p.m., and will take place at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. Stay up to date with NAU Cross Country and Track & Field by following us on Twitter and Instagram.
