FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Nov. 17, 2023) – Coming off its first victory of the season, the Northern Arizona University women's basketball team continues non-conference play at UC San Diego on Sunday, Nov. 19. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. Mountain Standard time at the LionTree Arena in La Jolla, Calif., and will also be broadcast on ESPN+.
Northern Arizona is 1-2 on the year and has played a bit of a lopsided schedule, first taking on two Pac-12 teams on the road before hosting NAIA member Benedictine Mesa at home on Wednesday night. Each of the three games have been decided by over 20 points.
The Tritons are 2-2 so far this season and are also coming off an NAIA home victory against La Sierra on Wednesday evening.
The Lumberjacks have faced UCSD twice in program history, as Sunday will mark the third clash all-time between the two foes. Last year, NAU hosted the Tritons at the Rolle Activity Center for the home opener and came away with a solid 87-54 victory. Five Lumberjacks scored in double figures during the contest, including
Nyah Moran and
Sophie Glancey. NAU forced 27 turnovers and exchanged them for 31 points.
Through three games this year, the Lumberjacks have a very balanced scoring attack with five players averaging at least seven points.
Olivia Moran leads the way with 8.7 points followed by
Saniyah Neverson with 8.0. Against BENU, Neverson came off the bench and led the team in scoring and rebounding, earning her first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Neverson also leads the team with 4.7 rebounds per game along with
Grace Beasley. Beasley also paces the squad with 2.7 steals per game while adding 3.0 assists.
As a team, NAU averages 67.7 points per game and is shooting 39.6 percent from the field. Its opponents average 68.3 points per contest on 39.6 percent from the field as well. The Lumberjack defense forces 19.7 turnovers per game and 4.7 blocks, while the offense averages seven triples per contest.
The Tritons have two players who average double figures, led by Izzy Forsyth with 14.0 points per game and Sumayah Sugapong who adds 12.3. Katie Springs has pulled down at least 10 rebounds in three out of four games to average 10.8. UCSD averages 72.5 points per game and holds its opponents to 49.3.
Both teams will be searching for their first Division I victory on Sunday, as the Tritons have topped La Sierra and Life Pacific but lost to California Baptist and then Saint Mary's in overtime. The Tritons finished 13-17 overall last year and 10-10 in Big West action.
Following Sunday's contest, the Lumberjacks will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Las Vegas Holiday Classic at the Orleans Arena. NAU first takes on Portland on Friday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. Mountain Standard time before playing Youngstown State on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 3:30 p.m. MST. The Lumberjacks return to Rolle to close out November on Wednesday, Nov. 29 against UNLV at 6 p.m. MST.
