FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (November 18, 2023) – On the first day of the Lumberjack Diving Invite, all seven NAU divers qualified for the eight spots in the 1-meter championship but were unable to take first. Day two on Saturday, saw five Northern Arizona divers in the 3-meter final, with each of the top five scores coming from NAU.
Sophomore Margaret Wesche finished third in the preliminary round with a total of 281.10 before scoring 294.20 in the final round to give the Lumberjacks a first-place finish in a diving event final for the first time in the invite.
Senior Maegan Jensen followed Wesche in second place with 292.45., a day after winning the preliminary in the 1-meter dives. Another senior, Reaney Preston, had the third-best score in the 3-meter final, earning herself a 291.75
A minute difference of 0.45 differentiated third from fourth place as sophomore Mackenna Stocker's 291.30 settled in that spot after winning the preliminaries in the morning with a 294.75.
The fifth and final Lumberjack diver placing in the top five was sophomore Grace Wesche, who saw the largest improvement of anyone on the day, starting with a 252.75 in preliminaries before scoring 289.20 points in the final.
Senior Victoria Knapp had the second-largest scoring total in the consolation round, and junior Kendall Marquez finished fourth out of the eight divers.
"It was a great day with the five of our divers qualifying going one through five in the final," head diving coach Nikki Kelsey said. "We had many zone qualifying scores, which is great to see this early in the season."
The fall edition of the Lumberjack Diving Invite will wrap up tomorrow as the eight teams compete in platform dives, beginning at 10 a.m.
