SAN DIEGO, Calif. (February 19, 2023) - Northern Arizona Men's Tennis improved to 7-1 on the season with a doubleheader sweep at UC San Diego (3-9) as the Jacks earned a 6-1 victory capped off with a second set 4-0 victory.
NAU extended its doubles point win streak to seven matches this season with morning match wins from duos Alex Groves and Piotr Galus and Facundo Tumosa and Daniel Dillon. Galus and Groves, winning eight straight together, secured a 6-2 victory while Tumosa and Dillon closed out at the No. 3 spot with a 6-3 win. Dominik Buzonics and Maikel De Boes played at the No. 1 spot as their match went unfinished when the Jacks clinched the doubles point.
Tumosa found his way to his most dominant victory of the season at the No. 1 spot, sweeping UC San Diego's Daniel Traxler in a quick 6-0, 6-0 match. At the No. 2, Galus faced UCSD's Phillip Lan, going toe-to-toe through the first few points before NAU's sophomore was able to pick up the pace to earn a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Buzonics closed out his match in the same fashion at the No. 4 position (6-4, 6-3), to UCSD's junior Jett Cole. De Boes played his match against the Tritons Diogo Tinoco, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Dani Torres played at the No. 5 spot, going the distance with three sets after a slow start with a 3-6 first set, following up with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 second and third set for the win. Groves moved to the No. 6 slot, picking up a 6-4 first set, dropping the second 0-6, and retiring in the third set due to injury, giving the point to the Tritons to end the match 6-1.
Tumosa and Dillon moved up to No. 2 in doubles play for the second match, while Galus paired up with Ziomber at the No. 3 as both pairs secured victories to extend NAU's doubles point win streak to eight straight matches. Tumosa and Dillon picked up the 7-5 win while Galus and Ziomber picked up a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreak win.
Galus faced Traxler at the No. 2, earning a 6-4, 6-2 victory to get the Jacks the second point of the day. With the win for Galus, the sophomore moved to a perfect 8-0 this season. De Boes earned a quick 6-1, 6-3 win while facing Cole at the No. 3. Torres stepped in at the No. 6 to face UCSD's Charles Qian, bringing in a quick 6-0, 6-1 win to secure the Lumberjacks victory at 4-0, leaving Tumosa, Buzonics, and Ziomber's matches all unfinished.
The Jacks will head to Oregon next weekend for a four match weekend as NAU takes on its first Big Sky Conference match of the season at Portland State on Friday at 10 a.m. MST. The Lumberjacks will then face Portland on Saturday at 10 a.m. MST, followed by a Sunday doubleheader against George Fox and Pacific at 8 a.m. MST, and 11 a.m. MST, respectively.
