Jacks Close Out 3-0 Weekend with 5-2 Win Against Idaho

LEWISTON, Idaho (April 2, 2023) - The Lumberjacks finished up a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 5-2 victory to the defending Big Sky champions, the Idaho Vandals, on Sunday afternoon.

NAU improved their 2023 record to 16-2, 3-0 in conference play, while extending the team's win streak to eight straight matches with just five slated matches left in the regular season.

The Jacks began Sunday's impressive performance with doubles pairing Dominik Buzonics and Daniel Dillon taking a sweeping 6-0 victory to Vandals' duo Mario Duron and Vivek Ramesh. Buzonics and Dillon's win marked Duron and Ramesh's first loss of the season together on the doubles courts while NAU's pairing improved to 5-1 this season.

Piotr Galus and Alex Groves played their doubles matchup against Idaho's Francisco Bascon and Matteo Masala at the No. 1 spot, falling 6-3 to the Vandals duo. Bascon and Masala picked up their eighth win of the season as a pairing. Maikel De Boes and Facundo Tumosa fell in a 6-3 match at the No. 2 to Idaho's Francisco Gay and Taiyo Kurata, dropping only the second doubles point of the season for the Jacks.

Bascon earned Idaho's lone singles victory of the match, as De Boes fell at the No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory for the Vandals. Buzonics continued off of the doubles success he and Dillon found earlier on in the day, to knock down Masala at the No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Buzonics improved to 11-2 this season, while giving Masala his sixth loss of the season.

Tumosa bounced back in his singles matchup at the No. 3, going 7-5, 6-4 to Idaho's Bruno Casino, marking Tumosa's 11th singles win of the season. Galus stepped up at the No. 2 once again, bringing in a three-set 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory to UI's Gay, as NAU's sophomore earned his 16th singles win this season.

Groves wrote his 11th victory this season, taking down Duron at the No. 5 in a three-set 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win for the Jacks. Closing out the perfect weekend for the Jacks, Maciej Ziomber stepped into the No. 6, going 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 while facing Kurata.

The Lumberjacks will return home next week for the Thursday matchup against the Sacramento State Hornets at 10 a.m. MST. NAU will then head on the road to take on the Idaho State Bengals in Pocatello on Saturday morning for an 11 a.m. MST matchup.
