Mullarkey Earns Second Big Sky Men’s Athlete of the Week Nod

FARMINGTON, Utah (Oct. 22, 2024) – For the second time this season, Northern Arizona cross country student-athlete David Mullarkey has been named the Big Sky Conference's Men's Athlete of the Week, the league office announced this morning.
 
It is the second honor of Mullarkey's career at NAU and the fifth overall award for the program this season.
 
Mullarkey competed at Wisconsin Pre-Nationals this weekend in Madison, Wisc., where he led the Lumberjacks with a 21st-place finish in the men's 8k "A" race, clocking a time of 23:12.1. His finish helped the men's team place fifth with 178 points in a field stacked with nationally ranked competition.
 
He has led the Lumberjacks in all three meets he's competed in this Fall. On Oct. 4, Mullarkey raced at the Joe Piane – Notre Dame Invitational where he finished fourth in the men's Blue 8k race with a time of 22:36.9 to help NAU finish second as a team. He would go on to earn Big Sky weekly honors.
 
Mullarkey also won the George Kyte Classic in his Lumberjack debut on Aug. 31.
 
The senior hails from Leeds, England, and is in his first season at Northern Arizona after transferring in from Florida State. In 2023, Mullarkey placed 40th at the NCAA Championships and earn All-American honors.
 
Saturday's meet concluded the regular season portion of the schedule for NAU as the teams turn its sights to the Big Sky Conference Championships in Pocatello, Idaho on Nov 1. The men's squad will look to defend its Big Sky title for the fourth-straight season while the women will go for their sixth. As a program, the 'Jacks will go for their fourth-straight sweep and the 21st overall sweep in program history.
