Swimming and Diving to Host Idaho Vandals

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Oct. 31, 2024) - The Northern Arizona women's swimming and diving team will host Idaho on Saturday, Nov. 2 in the Wall Aquatic Center. The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. Mountain Standard time.

"We're excited to meet with one of our conference opponents," head swimming coach Andy Johns said. "It's always great to race at home and Idaho has been putting up some good times, and they are a solid team. We are looking forward to the meet and it should be a great Saturday."

Northern Arizona most recently competed at Arizona State in a quad meet, competing with ASU, Arizona and Grand Canyon. The Lumberjacks were defeated by the ranked #21 Arizona State 63-218, 79-201 to Arizona, but took victory over Grand Canyon with 144-137.  

Northern Arizona dominated the top of the leaderboard in the 1-meter diving, taking spots two through six and ninth, giving them a win in the diving event. Elsa Musselman took second place in the 150-yard butterfly with a time of 1:26.48. 

The Idaho Vandals most recently posted a 167.5-132.5 victory against Big Sky conference foe Northern Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Idaho Swim Center. The Vandals had 10 first-place finishers, and 16 other Vandals placed in the top three to help lead Idaho to a 2-0 start to the season. 

Sophomore Ginger Kiefer tallied a team-high three first-place victories on the day. Kiefer dominated in the 1000-yard freestyle, taking first with a time of 10:26.73. She placed first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.64 and the 200-yard IM with 2:04.35.

Head coach Mark Sowa is in his 14th year at the helm of the University of Idaho women's swimming and diving program. Under Sowa, Idaho women's swimming and diving has posted four top-four finishes at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, including a program-best runner-up finish in 2014.

Head diving coach Wei Wei, is entering her first season as the head diving coach of the Idaho swimming and diving program in 2024-25. Wei, a former Chinese National Diving Team member, has spent most of her coaching career at the Los Angeles Diving Club and UCLA.

The meet will consist of the following events: 200 Medley Relay, 1000 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 1m diving, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 3m diving, 200 individual medley, and 200 freestyle relay.

The event will not be live-streamed, but live stats will be available on Meet Mobile.
