200-Meter School Record Highlights First Day of Competition at Willie Williams Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. (March 22, 2024) – The NAU track & field team saw a strong first day of competition at the Willie Williams Classic, highlighted by a record-breaking performance in the 200-meter.
 
Madeline Wilson broke the school record in the 200-meter, running a time of 23.26 as she easily took the event win. Kyairra Reigh finished fifth in the event, running a time of 23.82. Kenashalee Kerr and Hannah Schmidt finished 18th and 20th respectively, running times of 24.93 and 25.07.
 
Brenna Rodriguez placed 28th with a time of 25.45, with Alaynah Reed close behind in 33rd with a time of 25.67. Haley Posey and Jyntry Rucker placed 36th and 38th respectively, running times of 25.93 and 26.00. Jaycie Spencer also competed, finishing 43rd with a time of 26.54.
 
Kyle Smith was the top NAU finisher in the men's 200-meter, placing 10th after running a personal best time of 21.14. MarcAnthony Sanchez also ran a personal best time, finishing 26th with a time of 21.67. Ian Lipsey and Khamis Hassan placed 30th and 32nd respectively, running times of 21.79 and 21.87. Joshua Anderson was the final NAU competitor, finishing 35th with a time of 22.02.
 
LiNay Perry and Janelle Sanchez each earned new PRs in the 400-meter hurdles, with Perry placing sixth with a time of 1:02.26. Sanchez finished eighth with a time of 1:02.77.
 
Trenton Givens finished third in the 400-meter hurdles after running a time of 52.84, putting him at ninth on NAU's all-time performance list in the event. Tyson Givens ran a personal best time of 54.46 to place seventh in the event. Ethan Seppala and Cannon Booker also earned new PRs, finishing 11th and 15th. Seppala ran a time of 55.39 while Booker ran a time of 56.69.
 
Nikita Moore took the event win in the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:23.35. Annika Reiss was close behind in second with a time of 4:23.99 with Keira Moore in third with a time of 4:26.75. Karrie Baloga and Ava Mitchell placed fourth and fifth respectively, running times of 4:28.48 and 4:30.72. Anna Fenske ran a personal best time of 4:34.21 to place eighth, while Hayley Burns placed ninth with a time of 4:34.79. Skyler Wallace was the final NAU runner in the event, placing 20th with a time of 4:52.74.
 
Caleb Easton and Erik Le Roux finished third and fourth respectively in the 1,500-meter, running times of 3:49.77 and 3:50.33. Zack Munson placed sixth after running a time of 3:51.18 in his first career 1,500-meter. Riley Human ran a personal best time of 3:52.27 to finish eighth.
 
Sariyah Horne-Kemp saw a second place finish and a new PR in the hammer throw, hitting a mark of 58.14 meters. Tañia Duncan placed 18th in the event with a mark of 44.67 meters.
 
Garret Bernt placed third in the hammer throw after throwing 60.07 meters in his first meet of the outdoor season. Parker Bays finished seventh in the event with a mark of 57.35 meters. Bernt also competed in the discus, placing fourth with a mark of 51.16 meters. Trystan Gillis and Drayden Allen both PR'ed in the event, placing eighth and 10th. Gillis threw 44.74 meters while Allen threw 43.62 meters.
 
Alaina Diggs competed in the shot put for the Lumberjacks, finishing third with a mark of 14.87 meters.
 
Mitchell Effing placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 7.53 meters while Ian Lipsey and Christian Mutengela finished 10th and 11th respectively. Lipsey jumped 7.20 meters while Mutengela hit a mark of 7.12 meters. Sirr Butler also competed in the long jump, finishing 16th with a mark of 6.53 meters.
 
Madeline Wilson also competed in the long jump, placing seventh with a mark of 5.51 meters.
 
Clay Carbajal saw another strong performance in the javelin, placing fifth with a mark of 61.66 meters. Clayton Zupke finished 11th with a mark of 56.52 meters while Karim Grissett placed 16th with a personal best mark of 51.02 meters.
 
Piper Pfister was the lone NAU woman competing in the javelin, placing third with a mark of 44.35 meters.
