Lumberjacks Open Big Sky Play with 7-0 Victory over Portland State

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 3, 2024) – NAU Tennis (7-4) opened up Big Sky Conference play with a 7-0 victory over the Portland State Vikings (4-5), marking the team's third-straight win.
 
Earning their sixth double point this season, the Lumberjacks quickly recorded wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots to move on to singles play with the 1-0 advantage. At the No. 3, Maikel De Boes and doubles partner Semen Agynskyy grabbed the first victory over Portland State's Cade Edwards and Luka Jovanovic in a 6-4 match while Dominik Buzonics and Jakub Prachar quickly followed with a 6-3 victory over PSU's Andrea Brignacca and Simon Kuszynski.
 
Buzonics and Prachar improved to 4-2 together on the season, while De Boes and Agynskyy improved to 2-1. NAU now sits with a 17-10 overall doubles record through 11 dual matches.
 
Dani Torres would grab the Jacks first singles victory of the day at the No. 2 to put the Jacks up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 match to Viking Jan Semerak. With today's win, Torres improved his overall singles record to 6-2 this season. Closely following, De Boes closed out his match at the No. 4 in a 6-1, 6-3 matchup with Hembo Mathiasen to give the Jacks a 3-0 lead.
 
Ziomber's No. 6 victory would secure the match for NAU, taking the 4-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to PSU's Edwards. Prachar then found a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 5, defeating Kuszynski while Buzonics and Agynskyy were the remaining two singles matches at the No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
 
Going the distance in the second set, Buzonics picked up a 6-3, 7-5 victory facing Andrea Brignacca to put the Lumberjacks up 6-0. In the lone matchup to go to a tiebreak, Agynskyy completed the comeback victory facing Jovanovic at the No. 3, in a 4-6, 6-2 (10-6) match to close out the 7-0 Lumberjack victory.
