MISSOULA, Mont. (April 14, 2024) – NAU Men's Tennis (15-6, 6-1) improved to a 6-1 Big Sky Conference record on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over the Montana Grizzlies (14-8, 4-3), closing out the Jacks road schedule for the season while hitting a four-match win streak.
The Lumberjacks began the day with successful doubles play through all three courts while
Dominik Buzonics and
Jakub Prachar grabbed a dominant 6-1 victory over the Grizzlies pairing of Moritz Stoeger and Tom Bittner at the No. 1 court.
Maikel De Boes and
Piotr Galus would once again clinch the match for NAU at the No. 3, with a tiebreak 7-6 (7-3) victory over B. Wiger-Nordas and Chris Zhang.
Maciej Ziomber and
Dani Torres' match at the No. 2 would go unfinished while the pair were up in the tiebreak 6-6 (5-2).
De Boes early success trickled into singles play as he would give NAU the 2-0 lead at the No. 3 spot, knocking Montana's Fernando Perez in a 6-4, 6-3 match. Forced to make the comeback after dropping the second set, Torres bounced back for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 finish to Wiger-Nordas on court No. 2.
Montana found their two points in back-to-back fashion while Buzonics fell in a close match to Bittner at the No. 1, finishing 6-7 (3-7), 5-7. Galus went the distance with Guillermo Martin before falling in three sets as the No. 4 match finalized at 4-6, 7-5, 3-6.
With NAU in the lead at 3-2, things would be left to Ziomber and
Semen Agynskyy to close out the match at the No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Agynskyy clinched the match for the Jacks, picking up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Zhang, while Ziomber paved his way to a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win against Stoeger.
With Big Sky play wrapping up this week, NAU will have a shot to clinch a share of the regular season title next week.
