FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 25, 2025) – NAU Men's Tennis got their first win of the season in the home opener against Air Force, with a 5-2 final.
In the doubles part of the match, NAU took the point by winning two out of the three doubles matches.
Piotr Galus and Mateusz Lange found themselves down 3-0 in the set and worked their way back to make the score 3-3. However, the doubles pair came up just short, losing 6-3.
No. 1 doubles pair
Jakub Prachar and
Dani Torres only got one break in the set. That one break was all they needed as they held every service game in their set, winning it by the score line of 6-4.
Two players that are playing their first matches as Lumberjacks,
Takumi Katsuda and
Ivan Perisic, secured the doubles point for NAU in a back and forth set. The pair would win the set in a tiebreak, 7-6(4).
Torres was the first to finish in singles grabbing a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Torres found himself down 4-1 in the second set, then he was able to win the next five games to give the Lumberjacks their second point of the day.
Galus made the NAU advantage 3-0 after his 6-4, 6-3 win. Galus notched his first win of the new season picking up right where he left off from last season when he got a singles win over Sacramento State, 6-4, 6-3.
At the No. 4 spot,
Semen Agynskyy could not pull out the win, losing 7-6, 6-3, to AJ Moore.
Lange went the distance in his match but could not get the victory, losing in three sets to Matthew Staton, 6-1, 7-6, 6-4. This was Lange's first singles match as a Lumberjack.
The Lumberjacks were able to clinch the match when Katsuda won a close three set match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The freshman made his mark by being the player to confirm the win for NAU.
Prachar finished the day by giving NAU one more point to make a 5-3 victory over Air Force. Prachar won a three-set battle, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
The Lumberjacks start their season undefeated at 1-0. Head coach
Maciej Bogusz said the win over Air Force is a good way to start the new season.
"It's a great way to start the season," said Bogusz. "They stayed tough, so I am proud of that."
