Golf Opens Spring Season in Palm Springs

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Feb. 9, 2025) – The Northern Arizona women's golf team will open its spring season at the Mountain Classic Matchplay in Palm Springs, Calif. The tournament is hosted by Wyoming and Boise State and set to be played at The Classic Club.

The competition begins on Monday, Feb. 10, with first-round matches teeing off between 10:00 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. Mountain Standard time.

This event is the only match-play tournament of the season for the Lumberjacks. Unlike stroke play, which focuses on minimizing total strokes over an entire round, match play is about winning individual holes against an opponent.

T
ee assignments for the opening round are based on final fall team rankings, with the No. 8 seed facing the No. 1 seed, 7 vs. 2, 6 vs. 3, and 5 vs. 4. Subsequent rounds and tee assignments will be determined based on previous results. Winners will advance to play each other, while losing teams will compete in consolation brackets.

The L
umberjacks claimed the title in last year's tournament, defeating Montana State (3-0-2) in the first round, Wyoming (4-0-1) in the semifinals, and St. Thomas (3-0-2) in the championship match.

This year's tournament field includes Boise State, Montana State, North Dakota State, Portland State, Seattle, St. Thomas, and Wyoming.

Northern Arizona finished its fall season on a high note, setting two school records at the Clash at Boulder Creek. The team posted a record-breaking 18-hole round of -21 and went on to set a new 54-hole scoring record with a total of -27. The 'Jacks climbed four spots on the leaderboard to secure their second consecutive runner-up finish, following their second-place result at the Edisto Island Invitational in South Carolina.

Following the fall semester, sophomore Amy Hodgkins leads the team with a 71.77 scoring average. The Australian native holds a collegiate career average of 72.32. Close behind is junior Lizzie Neale, who posted a 71.91 average in the fall. The New Zealander has a collegiate career scoring average of 72.71.

Up next,
the 'Jacks will head down the mountain to Phoenix for the Grand Canyon Invitational, set for Feb. 25-26.
