FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 11, 2025) – The NAU Men's Tennis team beat the Sacramento State Hornets, 6-1 to remain undefeated in Big Sky Play. The win also makes the Lumberjacks the No. 1 seed in the Big Sky tournament, clinching a bye.
NAU kicked the day off by taking the doubles point by winning two out of the three doubles matches. The duo of
Semen Agynskyy and
Takumi Katsuda were the first to finish as they won 6-2.
Dani Torres and
Piotr Galus sealed the doubles point for the Lumberjacks. Torres and Galus won by a single break, 6-4.
NAU took the momentum from doubles into singles as they picked up five points. The five Lumberjacks that won in singles were Torres, Agynskyy, Katsuda,
Jakub Volesky and
Mati Lange.
Lange was the first Lumberjack to finish, as he won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Lange is now 8-8 in singles but has a 5-2 record when playing at the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
Agynskyy won in straight sets at the No. 3 position as he picked up a breadstick in the second set. Agynskyy won by the scoreline of 6-2, 6-1 and picked up his 12th singles win of the season.
Torres won his match to clinch the overall win against the Hornets. Torres had a smooth straight sets victory, 6-2, 6-2. The win moved the Lumberjacks lead to 4-0. Torres is now 14-4 with all of his matches being played at the No. 1 slot.
Katsuda was the final Lumberjack that won in straight sets as he was the fourth singles match to finish. Katsuda Notched a 6-3, 6-3 win. He has moved his singles record to 12-5 and is 5-2 at the No. 5 position.
Volesky remains undefeated when he takes on conference opponents at 6-0. Volesky had a close match but pulled out the victory in a third set 10-point tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
The next match for the Lumberjacks is senior day as
Piotr Galus will have his final match in the blue and gold. In that match, NAU will take on the Montana State Bobcats. The match starts at 2 p.m. and will take place at the Wall Aquatic and Tennis Complex.
