NAU Comes Up Shy of Big Sky Title After 4-0 Defeat From Sacramento State

PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 26, 2025) – The NAU Women's Tennis team lost to the Sacramento State Hornets, 4-0 in the Big Sky Championship.
 
The previous time the Lumberjacks played the Hornets, NAU won 5-2 in Flagstaff. 
 
Sac State got the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. Ruslana Kovalenko and Andrea Noguera fell 6-0 to Palina Saulevich and Catherine Walker in 22 minutes. Daryna Shoshya and Elen Jantacova were up 4-2 in the match, but could not quite finish the job as they lost to Irene Riva and Madelyn Ferreros at the No. 1 position, 6-4. 
 
Laura Duhl fell to Hornet, Lou Baudouin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The match had a total time of one hour and 27 minutes.  
 
Leontina Stojanovic and Patrycja Niewiadomska both lost four minutes apart from each other. Both players lost in straight sets, Stojanovic went down, 6-3, 6-1, then Niewiadomska fell, 6-3, 6-4. 
 
The Lumberjacks had a 7-13 record during their 2024 campaign, in 2025 they went 15-3. Head coach Ewa Bogusz commented on the Jacks' turnaround.
 
"Just a complete 108 from last year," Bogusz said. "You can see it in results, you can feel it around and it completely comes down to chemistry."
 
The Last time this NAU program had 15 wins was during the 2019 season when they finished 15-9.
