Lumberjacks Earn Draw in Neutral Contest with South Dakota State

WAIPAHU, Hawaii (August 31, 2025) – The Northern Arizona women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

NAU moves to 2-1-2 on the season while South Dakota State moves to 3-1-2. Kristin Puels led in shots with four, while Micala Boex provided the lone goal for NAU on three shots. South Dakota State held a slim edge in shots (15-14) but only drew one corner kick to NAU's six for the match.

Reece Reichwald made her fourth start in goal and played all 90 minutes, saving four shots.

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm in the opening 45 minutes. Puels took the first shot on goal of the match at the 19th minute to give NAU a corner kick opportunity, but another shot on goal by Valentina Navetta was saved as the 'Jacks tested the South Dakota goalie. NAU limited the Jackrabbits to just one shot on goal out of four total to make it 0-0 at the break.

The Jackrabbits began the second frame aggressively, getting their second shot on goal in the 48th minute that was saved by Reichwald. On the other end, the 'Jacks continued testing the South Dakota State goalie as Puels ripped another in the 50th minute.

Boex netted her goal unassisted in the 56th minute. NAU did not allow another shot on goal until the 70th minute, but the Jackrabbits kept pressuring until Adrianne Agbayani snuck one in to even the match at 1-1 in the 77th minute.

Neither team was able to get another shot on target in the final 13 minutes, even as the Lumberjacks drew a corner kick with less than a minute to play.

Boex has now scored a goal in four out of six games so far and leads the 'Jacks in points with eight this season.

The Lumberjacks return to action next Sunday, Sep. 7 at UC Irvine. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
