FARMINGTON, Utah (September 8, 2026) – Northern Arizona cross country's, Ava Mitchell was named Big Sky Co-Athlete of the Week following her impressive performance at the George Kyte Classic. This raced marked Northern Arizona's first competition of the season and home meet.
Competing to the line against Northern Arizona teammates, Mitchell led the Lumberjacks to an individual win with a time of 14:41.9 over 2.5 miles. Mitchell helped the Northern Arizona women's team score an impressive 15 points to win the competition.
"Not only is Buffalo Park the most gorgeous place to run but it's also a special and well-respected grounds to a lot of people." said Mitchell. "Being back there for conference with hopefully a big crowd will bring great energy and fun! People will get to know the 7000 ft fun."
She also highlighted her excitement with the race being the first meet of the season to set the tone for a great season ahead.
Mitchell's effort with teammates following in close behind her was an impressive start for the Lumberjacks, who have been consistently ranked in the NCAA's top cross country programs, as well as being ranked fifth by the Stride Report. Northern Arizona will return to compete in Terre Haute, Ind., for the John McNichols Invitational on Sept. 19.
The Lumberjacks will return to Buffalo Park later this fall to host the Big Sky cross country Championships.
