Bradlee Cotton, a member of the Northern Arizona women's basketball team from 2013-17, spent the fall 2017 semester in Argentina. She provided updates - with her Spanish translations - throughout the semester as she completed her research project!

Aug. 21-Sept. 1 (21 de agosto- 1 de septiembre):
The past two weeks has really been a time to settle into life in Argentina and as such, has had less of a focus on doing work for my internship. I have used this time to meet with my mentor, Sergio Georgieff, and we have defined my project. I will be doing a research project in a northern province of Argentina, Jujuy, within a river valley called the Quebrada de Humuaca (Humuaca River Basin). I will be using a combination of methods to study the sedimentology and geomorphology of alluvial fans within the river valley. Long story short, it is a very geology rich project. There are four parts to my project: background research and preparatory work, field work, data analysis, and a final report. Right now, I am just in the first stage, so I have spent the last couple weeks reading material related to the geology and geography of the area. This week I also started working with another professor who is a specialist in GIS (Geographic Information System). I am going to use GIS to create maps of my area that I will validate and use in the field. I expect to make four field trips throughout this semester, the first of which will hopefully be the week after next. After that, I will analyze my data and write my paper. The overall goal of this project is to analyze these structures which are near cities and have created dangerous situations for the residents. In January of this year, there was a flooding event which resulted in evacuation of an entire neighborhood. My goal is to evaluate the probability of repetition of these types of events and give suggestions on which areas need extra protection. Because this internship is counting toward my Spanish degree, all my work and my final paper will be written in Spanish. Depending on how well it all goes, I will also submit the paper to a journal to (hopefully) be published. Anyway, that’s what I have been up to, basically just building my foundation for the rest of the semester.

En las semanas pasadas, yo estaba acostumbrándome con la vida y la cultura argentina y mi prioridad segunda era trabajar en mi proyecto. Yo reuní con mi mentor, Sergio Georgieff, y nosotros definimos el proyecto. Mi proyecto es de estudiar un parte de una cuenca en la Quebrada de Humahuaca que está en Jujuy, Argentina. Jujuy es una provincia en el norte de Argentina. Usaré una combinación de métodos para evaluar la sedimentología y geomorfología de abanicos aluviales. En palabras simples, es un proyecto geológico. Hay 4 partes del proyecto: trabajo inicial, campo, análisis de data, y una reseña final. Ahora, estoy trabajando en el primer parte y paso la mayoría de mi tiempo leyendo artículos sobre la geología y geografía de mi sitio de trabajo. También estoy trabajando con otra profesora para conocer GIS y para crear mapas de mi sitio. Voy a usar estos mapas cuando voy al campo y tengo 4 viajes tentativas para el semestre. La meta es de completar los mapas en la próxima semana e ir al campo en la semana después. En el campo, voy a analizar las formaciones y después empezaré en evaluar los datos y escribir mi reseña. Estas formaciones están cerca de ciudades y con inundaciones crean problemas para los residentes. Al final de esta investigación, tendré una análisis y recomendaciones para localidades que necesitan protecciones adicionales. Esta pasantía es para mi carera de español, entonces todo mi trabajo y mi reseña final estarán escritos en español. Tengo ganas de publicar mi trabajo final y esta es una meta del semestre también. Bueno, es lo que tengo de ahora.

Sept. 2-8 (2-8 de septiembre):
This week, I spent most of my time working on my GIS maps. I had a meeting with my mentor, and he told me to basically redo all of them, so I spent a lot of time remaking maps. On the plus side, I am becoming proficient with the software. I also am writing a summary of the articles I read over the past few weeks. Next week, I expect to complete my maps, and after they get approved, I will be able to go to my field site to begin working there.

Esta semana, pasé la mayoría de mi tiempo trabajando en mis mapas de GIS. Tuve una reunión con mi mentor, y él me dijo que necesitaba hacer todos los mapas de nuevo. Este ejercicio me cuesta mucho tiempo, pero ahora estoy proficiente con el programa de GIS. También, estoy escribiendo un resumen de los artículos que he leído en las semanas pasadas. La próxima semana, pienso que vaya a completar mis mapas y después de este, yo puedo ir al campo para empezar mis trabajos allá.

Sept. 9-22 (9-22 de septiembre):
During the past couple weeks, I have been working to complete my maps in GIS and to prepare to go into the field. I finally got that work completed, and I was able to go to my study site this week, Thursday-Saturday. My university here is located in San Miguel de Tucumán, Tucumán, but my work sites are in another province, Jujuy, which is about 4 hours north of Tucumán. On Thursday, my two mentors and I drove to Jujuy and did a brief run through of the site to find easy routes to access the places we needed to go. Friday was a full work day where we measured and took pictures of the river channel and the debris flow. We also took note of the geology and any faults within the area. On Saturday, we basically did the same things as Friday, but we were working on the other alluvial fan, and then we began the journey back to Tucumán. I didn’t get back to my apartment until 10:30 on Saturday night, but it was a really successful trip. I now have a small mountain of data and pictures (all in all, I have 381 pictures!) to sort through and analyze, but that is all part of the research process. This week I will be meeting with my professor to begin the data analysis and I expect it to carry over into next week as well. I also have been working with my mentors to write and submit a summary of my work to present in a symposium at the university at the end of the semester. Overall, it is just a poster presentation to talk about my project to other students and professors. The event is similar to the symposiums at NAU in the spring time, so it will be a good experience and great practice for presenting and talking in Spanish. Here are a few pictures from the trip so you can have an idea about what I’m up to.

En las semanas pasadas, trabajaba en mis mapas de GIS y me preparaba para ir al campo. Por fin, completé estos trabajos y pude ir a mis sitios de estudio los días de jueves a sábado. Mi universidad argentina está ubicada en San Miguel de Tucumán, Tucumán, pero mis sitios están en otra provincia, Jujuy, que está unas cuatro horas al norte de Tucumán. El jueves, mis dos mentores y yo manejamos hasta Jujuy y conocimos un poquito con los sitios para identificar maneras y vías fáciles para entrar en el sitio. El viernes fue un día completo de trabajar. Nosotros medimos el alud y yo tomé fotos del sitio. También notamos las fallas y otras formas geológicas en el área. Hicimos básicamente el mismo proceso sábado, pero trabajamos en el otro abanico y al fin del día regresamos a Tucumán. Regresé a mi departamento a las 22:30 pero fue un viaje muy exitoso. Ahora tengo un montón de data, fotos, y trabajo para organizar y analizar, pero eso es un parte del proceso de investigaciones. ¡En total, yo tengo 381 fotos! Esta semana, yo voy a reunir con mi profesor para empezar este proceso y anticipo que tenga que hacer esto trabajo en la semana que viene también. En adición de el trabajo del campo, he trabajado con mis profesores para escribir un resumen para una jornada de estudios. En noviembre, presentaré mi proyecto para otros estudiantes y profesores de la universidad. Creo que este evento es similar a los simposios de NAU en la primavera, entonces será una experiencia muy buena para practicar presentar y hablar en castellano. Sept. 23-Oct. 6 (23 de septiembre- 6 de octubre):
In the past couple of weeks after my time in the field, I have learned a few things: 1) after you collect data, you will ultimately spend twice as long sorting through all of it, 2) despite the mountain of data, you never have all the information you want or need, 3) nature does not fit any typical form or structure, which means that 4) I will be spending the next two and a half months brainstorming and thinking outside of the box to find ways to organize the data into something coherent. All of this sounds like a lot, and it really is, but this is what research is, and I am having the time of my life learning this process. I feel like all the classes I have taken over the past four years have culminated in this project and this experience, and it is nice to be challenged mentally instead of physically as I was with basketball every day. I am excited to see what comes of the data once I am done analyzing it. In the meantime, my mentor and I are preparing for and planning our second trip to the field site. During this trip, we will gather the data that we are missing and add detail to the information we gathered last time. The next trip is planned to take place during the first week of November.

Durante las semanas pasadas después de mi tiempo en el campo, he aprendido algunas cosas: 1) después de colectar data e información, vas a pasar muchísimo más tiempo para organizarla, 2) por alguna razón, nunca tienes bastante información, 3) la naturaleza es increíblemente irregular y entonces 4) pasaré los próximos dos meses y medio creando y pensando en nuevas maneras de resolver problemas. Todas estas cosas parecen muy grandes, y la realidad es que, sí es mucho para hacer, pero este es el proceso de investigaciones y es muy divertido para mi hacerlo. Creo que todas las clases de mi carrera han culminado en este proyecto y esta experiencia. Es muy divertido para mi estar retada mentalmente en contra de físicamente como cuando jugaba básquet. Estoy muy entusiasmada ver los resultados de mi trabajo de este semestre. Antes de este, mi mentor y yo estamos preparándonos para nuestro siguiente viaje al campo para aumentar la data que tengo y colectarla que falto. Las fechas de este viaje estarán los primeros días de noviembre.

Oct. 7-Nov. 2 (7 de octubre- 2 de noviembre):
Wow, I didn’t realize it has been nearly a month since my last update, but the timing was a little strange, so here we are. I continued analyzing data and meeting with my professors during the week of October 9-13, but quickly realized that there is an issue with the data that I collected, and I had reached a stalemate. In order to take the next steps with processing the data, I need to return to the field sites and take another look, but this trip probably won’t be until next week at the earliest. The timing was a little weird because I accompanied my professor on a field trip for one of the classes he is teaching this semester. This trip was five days long beginning on the 23rd. On the trip, we drove around Tucumán and part of the neighboring province of Catamarca, we camped in various campgrounds and slept in our tents, and we saw lots of very cool geology. It was a relatively long trip, but I learned a lot and had a really good time. I got back to my apartment in the evening of the 27th and the next day, Julia (the other NAU student here with me) and I boarded a plane to Uruguay. Since I only have a tourist visa for Argentina, I have to leave the country every 90 days. I just got back from this trip where we spent four days relaxing by beaches and learning a little bit about Uruguayan culture. I have six weeks left in the semester here and before I come back to the United States for the holidays, which also means that I have six weeks to complete my project. I expect to be busy in the upcoming weeks going to the field and writing my report. Here are some pictures from my trips from the last couple of weeks.

No di de cuenta que ha pasado más o menos un mes hasta mi ultima resumen. Durante este tiempo, analicé los datos y me reuní con mis profesores. No había mucho trabajo para hacer porque necesito ir de nuevo al campo para corregir mis datos y colectar más información. No pude ir al campo en las semanas pasadas porque estuve en el campo con la clase de mi profesor y también viajé al Punta del Este, Uruguay. Mi viaje del campo duró cinco días y empezó el 23 de octubre. Durante este tiempo manejemos en Tucumán y la provincia de Catamarca para ver sitios geológicos diferentes. Fue una experiencia rica en las cosas que aprendí y en los lugares que visité. Volví a mi departamento en la tarde del 27 de octubre y el próximo día, Julia (la otra estudiante de NAU acá conmigo) y yo fuimos al aeropuerto para nuestro vuelo a Uruguay. Solo tengo una visa turística para mi tiempo en Argentina y entonces tengo que salir del país cada 90 días. Pasé cuatro días en la playa relajando y también vi un poco de la cultura uruguaya. Ahora tengo otros 90 días para mi visa y solo queda seis semanas hasta la terminación del semestre y de mi proyecto. Anticipo que estuviere muy ocupada en las semanas que vienen para terminar todo mi trabajo. Aquí son algunas fotos de mis viajes.

Nov. 2-25 (2-25 de noviembre):
The past few weeks have been heavily focused on my research project. I spent five days, 15th through the 19th, at my field site collecting and analyzing data. I used this time to make measurements, collect GPS points, and interpret pictures that were taken during my first field trip. I also noted the changes that have been made since the previous visit as people had begun working to clean up and repair the area. I am now busy organizing data, making calculations, writing my final report, and making a poster for a presentation in a couple weeks. Given that I now have less than a month before I come back to the United States for the holidays, I am pressed for time to get all this work done, but I am starting to see the results of my work, and it is very interesting to begin drawing conclusions.

Las semanas pasadas enfocaron primariamente en el trabajo de mi proyecto de investigaciones. Pasé cinco días, el 15 hasta el 19, en mi sitio donde colecté y analicé datos. Usé este tiempo para medir, tomar puntos GPS, y interpretar fotos del viaje anterior. También noté las diferencias causado por el trabajo hecho de la empresa. La obra es para sacar material y crear otra vía para el agua en el futuro. Ahora estoy muy ocupada porque tengo que organizar mis datos, hacer calculaciones, escribir mi reporte final, y hacer un poster para una presentación en dos semanas. Queda menos de una mes antes de vuelvo a los Estados Unidos para las fiestas, entonces sería unas semanas ocupadas, pero también estoy muy entusiasmada ver los resultados y las conclusiones de mis trabajos. 

Nov. 26-Dec. 15 (26 de noviembre- 15 de diciembre):
Classes and final exams have been finishing up during these last few weeks, and after today the university is officially closed for the holidays and their summer vacations. Because of this, I have been working hard to finish up tying together my research project and final report. The data analysis process is ongoing, but I have interpreted enough data to begin to draw conclusions. Last week, I prepared, finalized, and presented a poster in the annual symposium for my academic department here. This week, I went into the field to a new part of Argentina with my internship advisor and his doctorate student to her field site. We spent 5 days interpreting sediments and mapping the stratigraphy of the area. Since I am now packing my bags to come back to the United States for Christmas and New Year’s, this is my final update. Overall, this semester has been by far the most challenging of my college career, which is saying a lot compared to my first semester as a freshman. I have been pushed to my limits in academia, both scientifically and linguistically, in cultural aspects, and emotionally. Despite this, these past four months have been the most rewarding months of my life. I have learned about things that I never knew existed and I have grown in ways that I couldn’t have ever dreamed of. For this, I can’t express my degree of gratitude to Robyn (Sharp) and Michael (Kallsen) both, to Women’s Basketball, and the NAU Athletic Department in general. Without you, I wouldn’t have gotten this opportunity or been able to capitalize on it, so thank you from the bottom of my heart. And I am beyond excited to see what comes from next semester. I am going to be taking two classes at the university, my last capstone at NAU online, and I am going to travel a bit more when I have some free time. Again, thank you!

Las clases y los exámenes finales han terminado en las semanas pasadas y hoy es la última de en qué la universidad está abierta. Por eso, yo trabajaba duro para terminar mis investigaciones y mi reporte final. El proceso para analizar los datos continua, pero he interpretado bastante información para hacer conclusiones. La semana pasada, yo preparé, terminé, y presenté un poster en un simposio de la facultad de ciencias naturales. Esta semana, fui al campo hacia una parte nueva de Argentina con mi mentor y un estudiante de doctorado suyo. Pasamos cinco días interpretar los sedimentos y mapear la estratigrafía del área. Ahora estoy empacando mis maletas para volver a los Estados Unidos para Navidad y el Año Nuevo y a resultado de eso, esto es mi último resumen. En total, este semestre pasado fue el más difícil de me carrera universitaria. Yo estaba en los límites de mis capacidades, científicos, del lenguaje, de la cultura, y emocionalmente, pero estos meses pasados eran lo mas REWARDING de mi vida. He aprendido sobre cosas que sabía existen y he crecido en maneras que no pudiera soñar. Por eso, no puedo expresar el nivel de agradecimiento que tengo para ustedes, Robyn y Michael, para Women’s Basketball, y para el departamento atlético de NAU. Sin ustedes, ni tendría esta oportunidad ni podría aprovecharla, entonces gracias de lo más profundo de mi corazón. Estoy muy entusiasmada para el semestre que viene. Tomaré dos clases en la universidad en adición de mi última clase de español de NAU en línea, y viajaré un poquito más cuando tengo tiempo libre. Otra vez, ¡gracias!
