Justin McLean is in his first year as an assistant coach for the NAU Lumberjacks, assisting head coach Shane Burcar in all facets of the program.
McLean, who will work primarily with the Lumberjacks' guards, arrives at NAU following a four-year stint at Arizona State (2016-19) as a video coordinator under head coaches Herb Sendek and Bobby Hurley, after serving as a graduate manager for the Sun Devils from 2013-15.Â
ASU posted a 23-11 overall record in 2018-19, capturing its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2009. The Sun Devils placed second in the Pac-12, their best conference finish since placing second in 2009-10. In 2018, they notched their best two non-conference wins in school history (vs. No. 1 Kansas on Dec. 22, 2018 and at No. 2 Kansas on Dec. 10, 2017) and defeated two 2018 No. 1 seeds in a span of a few weeks (Kansas and Xavier). The Sun Devils also matched their highest ranking in school history (3rd in the Associated Press Poll in December of 2017).
Prior to his tenure with Arizona State, McLean was a student manager for four seasons under Steve Lavin and Norm Roberts during a time when the Red Storm produced a pair of Big East Rookies of the Year in Moe Harkless and Jakarr Sampson.
Â
He was a member of four NCAA Tournament squads previously at St. John's (2011) and Arizona State (2013, 2018, 2019). During McLean's time at Arizona State, the Sun Devils reached the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years for the first time since the 1980-81 season.
Â
McLean has served as a camp instructor at the Five-Star Basketball Camp and worked and volunteered at the City of Tempe and at previous NCAA Tournament sites in Newark, N.J. and Washington D.C.
Â
The Brooklyn, N.Y., native graduated from Bishop Laughlin Memorial High School in 2009 before going on to earn his bachelor's degree in sports management from St. John's and  master's degree in liberal arts at Arizona State. Â
