NAU Women's Tennis Falls To Arizona Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team dropped their second match of the season to the University of Arizona Wildcats 7-0.

"We started with great energy in doubles on all the courts," said head coach Maciej Bogusz. "The girls brought the intensity we wanted and we were very close to winning the doubles point."

NAU's No. 56  duo sophomore Brandy Walker and junior Eirene Granville started the 'Jacks off with a win besting U of A's Marie Van Aelst and Gitte Heynemans 6-3. Northern Arizona continued aggressively before the Wildcats pulled off a close win in doubles to clinch the point over No. 53 Hanneke Lodewijks and Chiara Tomasetti. 

"The girls were ready to go today," Bogusz said. "It was a team effort."

After dropping the doubles point, Arizona won the entirety of singles against the 'Jacks, but not without a fight. Lodewijks and Tomasetti took their opponents to three sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles while freshmen Ellie Millard and Madi Moore put up a strong effort in the lineup both falling in a tiebreak in the second set. 

Compared to last weekend, Bogusz and the Lumberjacks have already shown improvement. 

"We competed as one and had less weak spots compared to last weekend," Bogusz said. 

Northern Arizona returns to Flagstaff for a week of practice before competing in three straight matches starting in New Mexico. 

The Lumberjacks will face the New Mexico State Aggies Friday, Feb. 2 before taking on Abilene Christian in Las Cruces Saturday, Feb. 3. To cap off the weekend, the 'Jacks will travel to Texas Feb. 4 to compete against the University of Texas - El Paso. All three matches are set for 10 a.m. MST.
