Day Three of ITA Men’s All-American Update

Tim Handel moves onto the second round of singles

TULSA, Okla. (October 1, 2018) – The Lumberjacks were back in action Monday, Oct. 1 at the ITA Men's All-American National Championships. Northern Arizona had competitors in both the singles and double events.

In singles NAU had Tim Handel take on the sixth seed of the tournament, Matias Soto from Baylor.  Handel came out of the gates strong and was able to take down Soto in the first set 6-3.  While the second set was closer, Handel was able to secure the win by a score of 7-6.

With the win, Handel will move onto the second round where he will take on Boriss Kamdem of Tulsa Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. MST.

Northern Arizona also competed in doubles, with the duo of Ruben Montano and Handel.  The doubles pairing took on Iowa's Kareem Allaf and Jonas Larsen in the first round.  The 'Jacks duo was able to make quick work of the Hawkeyes as they beat them in two sets, 6-2 and 6-2.

In the second round of the doubles ITA Men's All American Championship, Montano and Handel would face Sean Hill and Jeffrey Hsu of BYU.  The BYU duo was able to take the first set 6-3.  That is when the Lumberjack's put together a strong second set with a score of 6-1.  In the winner take all final set Handel and Montano just fell short as they fell 10-6.  This marks the end of the tournament for the pair.
