LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 10, 2018) – Sophomores
Ellie Millard and
Cora-Lynn von Dungern were perfect on the opening day of the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, winning both their singles and doubles matches on Wednesday. Overall, the Northern Arizona women's tennis team posted four singles victories with Millard and von Dungern pairing up for NAU's lone doubles win.
As a doubles tandem, Millard and von Dungern prevailed in a tiebreaker to defeat Harsha Challa and Lindsay Harlas of New Mexico State, 8-7, to advance to the second round.
Both 'Jacks moved on to the second round in the singles bracket fairly easily with straight set wins on the first day of action at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Millard dispatched Wyoming's Mihaela Kaftanova, 6-3, 6-3, while von Dungern cruised past Idaho State's Angela Walker, 6-2, 6-1.
NAU's two seeded players, junior
Chiara Tomasetti and senior
Hanneke Lodewijks, also notched singles wins. Tomasetti, seeded No. 4, only dropped one game in defeating Megan Poe of Idaho State, 6-0, 6-1. Meanwhile, Lodewijks, the No. 13 singles seed, posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over BYU's Katie Fitt.
Tomasetti and Lodewijks are seeded second in the doubles bracket and received a first round bye on Wednesday.
Senior
Eirene Granville put up a tough effort against the No. 10 seed, En-Pei Huang of the host UNLV. After taking the first set, Granville would eventually fall in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. Granville was one of three Lumberjacks, along with sophomore
Madi Moore and freshman
Emilie Haakansson, to suffer three-set defeats.
NAU's two doubles losses were also closely contested with Moore and Granville falling to a Wyoming duo by an 8-7 score. Haakansson and freshman
Adrianna Sosnowska fell 8-6 to a pair from Nevada.
Doubles play will kick off Thursday's competition at 9 a.m. with doubles followed by two rounds of singles.
