Chiara Tomasetti completed an absolutely dominant performance at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships when she defeated Denver's Arisha Ladhani, 6-3, 6-1, on Sunday to win the singles title. Tomasetti became the first player in program history to win a regional championship with her seventh victory in five days.
The No. 4 seed in the tournament was the last player standing in the field of 128 players from a total of 22 schools throughout the West. As a result of her efforts, Tomasetti qualified for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships to be held in Surprise, Ariz. from Nov. 7-11.
"What an amazing performance by Chiara," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "She has put in a lot of work in the past months and she got out what she has put in. She's been trusting the process since last fall and today she made history for NAU tennis."
Tomasetti's dominance was clearly stated in the numbers as dropped just one set in her seven matches this week. Furthermore, nine of her 14 set wins were by scores of 6-0 or 6-1.
The third-year Lumberjack from Roesrath, Germany, finished what she started on Wednesday by knocking off Ladhani, a redshirt senior at Denver, with ease.
Her tournament-clinching performance capped a regional performance by the Northern Arizona women's tennis team that saw the Lumberjacks go 20-10 in singles and 7-7 in doubles.
"We already had a strong performance overall as a team this week," Bogusz said. "Chiara, our team captain, just put the cherry on top today."
NAU will have a couple of weeks off until the 'Jacks return to action at a pair of tournaments – the Jack Kramer Invite and the GCU Invite – the first weekend of November.
