SURPRISE, Ariz. (November 7, 2018) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team kicked off the ITA Fall National Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The Lumberjacks only had
Tim Handel and
Ruben Montano competing in the doubles event. The duo qualified for the tournament after winning the ITA Mountain Regionals on Oct. 19.
The tandem of Handel and Montano took on Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiroof of Virginia Tech in the opening round of the ITA Fall National Championship. The first set of the match was extremely close as it came down to a point here or there, with Handel and Montano eventually losing it 7-5. The second set was very similar to the first as the NAU duo fell by a score of 7-5 to the VT doubles pair.
With the loss, Handel and Montano will move into the consolation bracket where they will face off against Martin Joyce and Hunter Tubert of Ohio State at 5:30 p.m. MST. The Ohio State team entered the ITA Fall National Championship as the fourth seed.
