NAU Women's Tennis To Face New Mexico In Home Opener


FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Northern Arizona women's tennis have competed in five matches thus far and will bring action to Flagstaff for the first time this season against the University of New Mexico Saturday, Feb. 17.

The Lumberjacks will host the Lobos in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex at 1 p.m. for their home opener.

Northern Arizona is 3-2 overall, currently on a three-match winning streak, with victories against New Mexico State, Abilene Christian and University of Texas – El Paso.

The 'Jacks have yet to compete in a Big Sky conference matchup; their first will come next weekend against the University of Montana Grizzlies at home.

Saturday's match is free to attend and all fans will receive an NAU-branded adhesive phone wallet, while supplies last.

Following the match, there will be a free youth clinic in the Rolle Activity Center to represent and celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. All fans who attend the tennis match, including those not participating in NGWSD, will also be provided with a voucher for a discounted women's basketball ticket for their 5 p.m. match against North Dakota.

The Lobos will travel to Flagstaff for Northern Arizona's season home opener this weekend. New Mexico is currently 1-1 and coming off of a 6-1 win over Western Michigan. The last time these two teams competed against each other was in October at the New Mexico Hidden Dual Invitational where the 'Jacks came away with a winning 8-1 record in doubles and 9-9 record in singles. The nine-woman roster is led by head coach Stephanie Wooten-Quijada who is in her second season with the Lobos. New Mexico's squad is comprised of seven freshmen. Last season, the Lobos finished 8-14 overall, including a 4-3 loss to the Lumberjacks.

Coming Up
Northern Arizona will compete in their first Big Sky Conference match to start the weekend against Montana Feb. 23. The following day the Lumberjacks will take on Wyoming, where Maciej Bogusz was formerly the head coach. The 'Jacks will continue on this four-match home stretch at the Aquatic and Tennis Complex.
