ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Northern Arizona University's
Brooke Andersen and
Tyler Day competed at the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships in the women's weight throw and the men's 3000 meter race in Albuquerque, New Mexico over the weekend.
Day went first, finishing ninth overall in the 3000m with a 8:08.16 performance on Saturday afternoon. The junior, who is redshirting this indoor season for NAU overcame getting tripped up early in the race and fought his way from the back of the pack with a strong finish in the field of 14.
Andersen continued her run of strong marks with a 21.77m showing in the weight throw for a sixth-place finish on Sunday. The senior has now posted throws of 20.70m or more in five of the six meets she has competed in this indoor season.
Andersen set the NAU school and Big Sky record with a toss of 21.95m at the Don Kirby Invitational which sits as the seventh-best mark in the nation.
"NAU track and field continues to have widespread representation even beyond college-only competition," director of track and field
Michael Smith said. "There are only a handful of collegians qualified for the USATF Indoor Championships and we were fortunate that both Brooke and Tyler were able to take advantage of this opportunity to compete and gain experience at the highest level nationally in their sport."
"These are crucial learning environments that are only matched at the NCAA Championships thus rarely recreated," Smith added. "I thought they both were gritty and fought well and I can see them making US teams like this one in the future."
Northern Arizona jumps coach Roderick Townsend also competed at the meet in the men's high jump while former Lumberjack Deante Kemper finished in a tie for fourth in the same event after clearing 2.19m.
The Lumberjacks return to action when they host the 2018 Big Sky Indoor Championships this Thursday, Feb. 22 through Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Walkup Skydome.
