EUGENE, Ore. (August 4, 2025) – With their performances at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field over the weekend, three former Northern Arizona track & field alumni qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Nico Young (5000m, 10,000m), Brooke Andersen (hammer throw) and
Maggi Congdon (800m) earned their spots on Team USA for the World Championships set to take place Sept. 13-21 in Tokyo.
Across events ranging from the 800m to the hammer throw, the Lumberjack presence stood tall with 10 current and former NAU student-athletes competing at the USATF Outdoor Championships. Young provided the headline performance with his first national title.
In a thrilling finish in the men's 10,000 meters, Young outkicked 2024 Olympic medalist Grant Fisher to claim his first U.S. title. Young crossed the line in 29:02.12, edging Fisher by two-tenths of a second. The performance marks a breakthrough on the senior national stage for Young, who also placed third in the 5000m with a time of 13:27.05, earning his spot on Team USA in both events.
Joining Young in Tokyo will be Congdon, who delivered on of the meet's most exciting finishes to place second in the women's 800m with a 1:59.39, securing her first national team berth.
Meanwhile, Andersen made another statement in the women's hammer throw, finishing second overall with a mark of 75.14m (246-6). The 2018 graduate remains one of the most consistent throwers in international competition and heads to Worlds looking to capture her second World Championship title following a gold medal in 2022.
Among the most inspiring stories of the weekend were performances from Alex Carlson and
Colin Sahlman, who both competed as current NAU student-athletes. Carlson, a senior, ran 4:10.17 in the 1500m and placed eighth overall, setting a new personal-best against seasoned professionals. Sahlman, a junior, advanced to the 800m final and placed ninth, clocking 1:45.99 — a significant step forward in his young career.
A number of NAU distance runners also competed in Eugene.
Drew Bosley placed 17th in the 5000m in 13:34.51, wrapping up a long competitive season as one of NAU's most decorated distance alumni. Abdihamid Nur, a 2024 Team USA Olympian, also ran in the 5000m. In the 3000m steeplechase,
Jeret Gillingham ran 8:47.61, finishing 24th overall.
Meanwhile on the women's side,
Elise Stearns placed 18th in the 5000m with a time of 15:40.08, continuing a stellar collegiate season.
Annika Reiss clocked a new personal-best of 4:07.45 in the 1500m.
With Young, Congdon, and Brooke Anderson preparing for the World Athletics Championships next month, NAU's legacy continues to grow from Flagstaff onto the world stage.
