EUGENE, Ore. (June 9, 2026) - The 2026 collegiate track and field season reaches its final stop this week as Northern Arizona sends five athletes to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Competing against the nation's top athletes, the Lumberjacks will be represented by Colin Sahlman in the men's 800 meters, Tor Hotung-Davidsen in the men's 1,500 meters, Josiah Johnson in the men's 400-meter hurdles, Hayley Burns in the women's 1,500 meters and Cael Grotenhuis in the men's 5,000 meters. The NCAA Outdoor Championships run June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.
Action begins Wednesday evening with three Lumberjacks taking the track during the men's semifinal session. Hotung-Davidsen will lead off the week in the men's 1,500-meter semifinal at 5:21 p.m. MST. Sahlman follows in the men's 800-meter semifinal at 6:58 p.m. MST, while Johnson races in the men's 400-meter hurdles semifinal at 7:14 p.m. MST.
The trio earned their places in Eugene following strong performances at the NCAA West First Round in Fayetteville. Sahlman advanced through the 800-meter quarterfinals after winning his heat, while Hotung-Davidsen secured his spot in the national meet in the 1,500 meters. Johnson enters the championships after a season that saw him break the NAU school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 49.56.
Thursday belongs to the women, with Burns representing the Lumberjacks in the women's 1,500-meter semifinal at 5:21 p.m. MST. Burns enters Eugene following one of the most accomplished seasons in program history. The senior owns Big Sky-leading marks in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters and broke both the NAU and Big Sky Conference records in the 5,000 meters earlier this spring with a time of 15:18.26.
Grotenhuis rounds out the NAU contingent on Friday in the men's 5,000-meter final at 6:55 p.m. MST. The senior secured his return trip to Eugene by advancing through the NCAA West First Round and will look to finish his collegiate career on the national stage.
Hayward Field once again serves as the home of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, continuing Eugene's long-standing reputation as one of the premier venues in track and field. The four-day meet features the nation's top collegiate athletes competing for individual national titles and team points.
