Lumberjacks To Host First Conference Match This Weekend

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — After defeating New Mexico in its home opener, the Northern Arizona women's tennis team will host its first Big Sky Conference match against Montana Friday, Feb. 23 in addition to Wyoming Saturday, Feb. 24.

The Lumberjacks will first host the Grizzlies at 2 p.m. Friday and the Cowgirls at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Both matches will be held in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex and are free for all who attend.

Northern Arizona has won four consecutive matches and is currently 4-2 on the season ahead of its first conference match up.

Fans will receive a free NAU Foam Axe to "Axe the Grizzlies" on Friday and free 7000s t-shirts on Saturday whiles supplies last.

  • Freshman Madi Moore was named Big Sky Athlete of the Week Feb. 7 after going undefeated in singles and doubles across three matches.
  • Sophomore Tomasetti was the first Lumberjack in the 2018 season to pick up an Athlete of the Week honor Jan. 24.
  • Last season the Lumberjacks finished on top as the 2017 Big Sky Regular Season champions after recording an 18-5 overall record and an undefeated 11-0 conference record.

The Grizzlies will travel to Flagstaff for Northern Arizona's first conference matchup of the season. Montana is currently 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the Big Sky after shutting out Portland State 7-0 at home. The Grizzlies are coming off of a 7-0 victory over Lewis-Clark State last weekend and will first take on Northern Arizona before traveling to Phoenix to compete against Ottawa. Last time Montana took on the Lumberjacks was in its home finale last season where the 'Jacks clinched a 7-0 win and a share of the Big Sky Conference championship title. Overall, the Grizzlies went 3-19 and recorded a 2-9 conference record. The eight-woman roster is led by head coach Steve Ascher who is in his 10th year with Montana.

Wyoming will travel to Northern Arizona to take on the Lumberjacks in its sixth match of the season. The Cowgirls are 2-3 overall with wins over Central Oklahoma and, another Big Sky opponent, Northern Colorado. Wyoming is coming off of two losses last weekend against Nebraska and Wichita State. The last time, Wyoming competed against the Lumberjacks was in March last season were they lost 4-3. The seven-woman roster is led by recently named head coach Dean Clower. Northern Arizona's current head coach Maciej Bogusz was previously the associate head coach at Wyoming last season.
 
Coming Up
Northern Arizona will host the Sacramento State Hornets next weekend Friday, March 2. The Lumberjacks will conclude its four-match home stretch and will face the next five on the road.
