FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — In its sixth consecutive victory, the Northern Arizona women's tennis team dominated the Wyoming Cowgirls 5-2 Saturday, Feb. 24.
The Lumberjacks remain undefeated at home with three wins and started off Big Sky action strong with their first win over Montana this weekend. Overall, the 'Jacks are 6-2 and 1-0 in conference.
"It was a great team win today," head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "The team competed extremely hard against a tough and experienced Wyoming team."
Northern Arizona's No. 45 nationally ranked pair
Hanneke Lodewijks and
Chiara Tomasetti got back together this afternoon to start the Lumberjacks off strong with a 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Wyoming tied it up, before the 'Jacks clinched the doubles point with
Eirene Granville and
Madi Moore paired at the No. 3 position.
The Lumberjacks maintained momentum with Moore winning 6-1, 6-0 to put the 'Jacks up 2-0, then the Cowgirls picked up their first point of the afternoon.
NAU then dominated the rest of the match solidifying the win at 4-1 with wins from Lodewijks and Tomasetti, who clinched with her 6-2, 7-5 performance at the No. 1 position.
"It was our best match so far this season," said Bogusz. "Big thanks to our fans that came out to support us."
The two teams continued with Wyoming picking up its second point and NAU finishing out the match with freshman
Ellie Millard who went 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 at the No. 4 position for a hard-fought victory.
Northern Arizona will have a week of practice before hosting Sacramento State March 2 in its second conference match of the season. That match will be the lone competition of the weekend for the 'Jacks and is set for 1 p.m. in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex.
