PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team ended the regular season defeating Grand Canyon 6-1 in Phoenix.
The Lumberjacks increase to 18-3 overall and remain undefeated at 11-0 in Big Sky action.
"We definitely needed this match to prepare us for the conference championships next week," head coach
Maciej Bogusz said.
Grand Canyon started off doubles with a 7-5 win against
Hanneke Lodewijks and
Ellie Millard before NAU pair
Chiara Tomasetti and
Madi Moore tied it up with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 position.
Cora-Lynn von Dungern and
Eirene Granville clinched the doubles point shortly after against Martina Lo Pumo and Celina Buhr 6-3 to put the score at 1-0.
"The team did a great job adapting to the situations and closing out sets and matches today," said Bogusz.
Freshman Moore went on to defeat Kylie Waschuk 6-1, 6-1 to start singles before the Antelopes got their sole point of the match up against Granville 6-4, 6-3.
The Lumberjacks then finished out the remainder of the match in the lead with Von Dungern's 6-3, 7-5 win and Tomasetti's match-clinching 6-1, 6-4 win.
Millard and Lodewijks topped it off with wins at the No. 4 and No. 1 positions 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 and 6-7(3), 7-6, 10-7, respectively.
The 'Jacks are now looking to recover and prepare for the Big Sky Conference championship tournament.
"We can't wait for the opportunities we will have next week," said Bogusz.
The tournament will begin Thursday, April 26 and will run through Saturday, April 28 at the Phoenix Tennis Center. The Lumberjacks have earned the No. 1 seed after clinching the regular season title for the third year in a row.
