Track and Field to Send 20 Athletes to Compete at NCAA West Preliminaries

INDIANAPOLIS - The Northern Arizona University track and field program will send 20 athletes competing across 14 events to the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminaries on May 24-26, per the Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee on Thursday. The Lumberjacks will compete at California State University, Sacramento's Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California as they try to lock down spots for nationals.

"This meet is one that we have been working all season towards," director of track and Field Michael Smith said. "We have a chance on both the men's and women's side of things to advance some athletes on to the NCAA Championships. This meet is just another step in our process and training and I think we are starting to put everything together at the right time. I am very proud for all of our qualified athletes who now get the chance to continue their seasons competing at regionals."


Advancing to west prelims on the men's side is Cameron Rayford (long jump), Kossi Tchenawou (100-meter and 200-meter), Tyren Wolfe (200-meter and 400-meter), Luis Grijalva (1500-meter and 5000-meter), Andy Trouard (5000-meter), Tyler Day (10000-meter), Matt Baxter (10000-meter), Khalil Dorsey (110-meter hurdles) and the 4x100-meter relay team.

For the women, Jasmine Malone (400-meter), Nicole Fotinos (400-meter), Ashley Taylor (800-meter), Maggie Carruth (800-meter), Paige Gilchrist (5000-meter), Emily Roughan (5000-meter), Miranda Myers (5000-meter), Helena McLeod (long jump), Brooke Andersen (hammer throw) and Tiana Hatler-Stefick (hammer throw) all advanced to regionals.

The West Preliminaries consist of two rounds for competing athletes, a prelim and a final. Overall the top 12 athletes out of the region in each event will advance to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.
