Hanneke Lodewijks and junior
Chiara Tomasetti picked up right where they left off in the spring by advancing to the Singles Flight A Round of 16 at the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains. The Lumberjacks also went undefeated in doubles, winning all three of their day one matches to highlight Thursday's action.
The Lumberjacks' reigning All-Big Sky Singles First Teamers shined starting with Lodewijks' two-win day. Lodewijks defeated Idaho's Shion Watabe in the first round, 6-3, 6-1, and then earned her way into the Round of 16 by rallying from a first set loss to Ruth Copas of New Mexico. After dropping the first set 6-7, Lodewijks won the final two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
She will be joined in Friday's third round by Tomasetti, who cruised past Wyoming's Ida Krause, 6-4, 6-0 in the second round after starting the day with a bye.
Playing in Flight A of the singles bracket, senior
Eirene Granville won first round match in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 over Northern Colorado's Raffaella Mora before bowing out in the second round. Sophomores
Ellie Millard and
Madi Moore dropped their only singles matches of the day.
Sophomore
Cora-Lynn von Dungern defeated Montana State's Ennie Zander, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2 to advance in the winner's bracket of the Singles Flight B, as did freshman
Emilie Haakansson. Haakansson, in her NAU debut, defeated Wyoming's Ana Royo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
The Lumberjacks were perfect in doubles play with three NAU pairs moving on in the winner's bracket of Flight A. Tomasetti and freshman
Adrianna Sosnowska defeating Boise State's tandem of Hanna Kantenwein and Frankie Trella, 8-2, while Millard and Granville knocked off Idaho State's Hristina Cvetkovic and Megan Poe by a score of 8-4.
Haakansson and Lodewijks received a bye into the Flight A second round.
In Flight B, Moore and von Dungern also were victorious as they pulled out an 8-6 win over Madison Fenske and Melissa Coburn of Idaho State.
The Lumberjacks will continue with play at the Air Force Academy Friday morning at 8 a.m. MST.
