COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 16, 2018) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team posted three runner-up finishes out of four main draw championships on the final day of the ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains tournament hosted by the Air Force Academy.
Junior
Chiara Tomasetti and freshman
Emilie Haakansson were the runner-ups in the Singles Flight A and Flight B respectively, while sophomores
Madi Moore and
Cora-Lynn von Dungern finished second in the Doubles Flight B.
"We had a great first tournament," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "We showed toughness out on the court. It was a tough four days with a lot of tennis, but they all worked hard and got better every day. It was a definitely a strong start to the season."
Tomasetti fell short in her bid for the title in Flight A as she dropped her only two sets of the weekend to Air Force's TJ Fumagalli. Fumagalli got the best of Tomasetti by a score of 6-4, 6-0.
For Haakansson, it was an impressive debut for the first-year Lumberjack from Denmark as she placed second in Flight B amongst a field that included 11 teams from the Mountain Region. Haakansson fell on Sunday to New Mexico's Yuelin Chen, 6-3, 6-4.
In the Flight B doubles championship, Moore and von Dungern came up just shy of the title against Chen and Lauren Rich of New Mexico. Moore and von Dungern dropped a close 8-6 decision to place second.
Non-championship match victories went to von Dungern, who defeated Boise State's Wiktoria Nossek, 6-4, 7-6, in singles. Tomasetti and freshman
Adrianna Sosnowska cruised to an 8-3 doubles win over Montana State's Laura Mary and Linda Vink.
Senior
Hanneke Lodewijks, Moore and Sosnowska each dropped singles matches as well to round out NAU's Sunday results.
The Lumberjack women's tennis team will head back out to Las Vegas, Nev. this upcoming Friday through Sunday for the UNLV Fall Invitational.
