DALLAS, Texas (January 11, 2019) – In her first action of the spring, freshman
Emilie Haakansson led the Northern Arizona women's tennis team on Friday as the Lumberjacks opened play at the Metroplex Mania. Haakansson went unbeaten in singles and doubles, pacing the 'Jacks in their spring season debut.
NAU faced the host team, SMU, on its home court in singles to start Friday's play at the SMU Tennis Complex. Haakansson notched the Lumberjacks' lone win versus the Mustangs – last season's American Athletic Conference runner-up. Haakansson displayed a lot of fight, battling back from a first set defeat at the No. 5 singles position.
Facing SMU's Karina Traxler, Haakansson rallied for a three-set victory, 2-6, 7-5, 7-4. NAU was swept in straight sets at the remaining five singles spots.
The Lumberjacks regrouped and posted a successful showing in doubles as they took two of the three matches versus BYU. NAU's two wins came at the top two spots.
