Arizona State Hands Lumberjack Women’s Tennis 4-0 Defeat

TEMPE, Ariz. (January 21, 2019) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team took their shots at Arizona State on Monday, but the Sun Devils proved to be victorious in handing the Lumberjacks, 4-0. With the loss, NAU finished its first weekend of dual matches with 1-1 record.
 
"I'm happy about today," said head coach Ewa Bogusz. "We played tight on every court and gave ourselves chances to win. We stayed in it as long as we could. They beat us today, but we will use this as an experience and carry on even stronger."
 
Arizona State claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The Sun Devils' All-American doubles pair of Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh clinched the doubles point, and the 1-0 match lead, by defeating junior Chiara Tomasetti and freshman Adrianna Sosnowska, 6-3.
 
After the Sun Devils took the No. 6 singles, they went up 3-0 with a win at No. 2 with Hattingh defeating sophomore Ellie Millard, 6-4, 6-2. Arizona State then secured its third win of the season when Savannah Slaysman got past freshman Emilie Haakansson, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
 
At match's end, Tomasetti was ahead of John-Baptiste on court one. Tomasetti claimed the first set, 7-5, and was leading the second set, 2-0. Sophomore Madi Moore also was hanging tough at No. 5 locked up at 4-4 in the second set versus Samantha Alicea. Moore was aiming to force a third set after dropping the first set.
 
Also left unfinished was the No. 2 doubles match with Millard and Moore narrowly trailing Alicea and Slaysman, 4-3.
 
The Lumberjacks will be off from competition this week before heading right back down the I-17 for a pair of matches in Tucson on Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2. NAU will face Memphis and Arizona at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
