LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 24, 2019) – By the end of the second day of play at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, the Northern Arizona women's tennis senior
Chiara Tomasetti advanced to the quarterfinals in the singles main flight. Tomasetti notched a pair of easy victories in Thursday's second and third rounds to march on, while a couple of her teammates battled top seeds themselves.
Tomasetti, the tournament's top seed, began the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Whitney Hekking of Utah to move into the round of 16. She followed with an equally dominating victory over Montana's Julia Ronney, 6-1, 6-2, and will play in the quarterfinals on Friday.
While Tomasetti advanced, sophomores
Emilie Haakansson and
Adrianna Sosnowska's run in the main draw came to an end, although it did not end without a fight. Haakansson joined Tomasetti in the third round after knocking off Colorado's Antonia Balzert, 6-2, 6-3, in her first match of the day.
In the round of 16, Haakansson faced off against third-seeded Camille Verden-Anderson of Denver and pushed her to three sets before eventually falling 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Like Haakansson, Sosnowska squared off against one of the top seeds in the second round. Facing Colorado's Sara Nayar, ranked No. 65 nationally and seeded fourth, Sosnowska claimed the first set but ultimately fell, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Freshmen
Elinor Beazley and
Mimi Bland continued play in the main draw of Flight Two. Beazley collected a three-set victory, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, over Southern Utah's Alexandra Ngo before bowing out in a tough 7-6, 7-5 loss to BYU's Leah Heimuli in the third round. Meanwhile, Bland fell to Northern Colorado's Sandra Keta, 6-3, 6-3, in her only match of the day.
The Lumberjacks' top two doubles pairs were victorious on Thursday and advanced to the third round. The third-seeded tandem of Tomasetti and Haakansson edged BYU's Emilee Astle and Anastasia Almeida, 8-6, while Sosnowska and Bland defeated Utah State's Gabrielle Dekkers and Zara Ryan by the same score.
In consolation play, junior
Madi Moore and
Elinor Beazley came up short to Idaho's pairing of Maggie Chen and Marta Magalhaes, 8-3.
NAU's two doubles teams will look to advance to the regional semifinals with the round of 16 and quarterfinals being contested on Friday. Tomasetti will also look to punch her ticket to the singles semifinals on day three at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex.
