NAU Women’s Tennis to Play for Mountain Regional Singles and Doubles Titles

RESULTS

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 26, 2019) –
The Northern Arizona women's tennis team was nothing short of convincing in their semifinal matches on the Fertitta Tennis Complex courts at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. As a result, the Lumberjacks will play for the singles and doubles titles on Sunday with opportunities to qualify for next month's Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.

While senior Chiara Tomasetti's appearance in the singles championship match is no surprise, sophomore Adrianna Sosnowska and freshman Mimi Bland's run to the doubles finals took another impressive turn on Saturday.

Facing the top-seeded and No. 53 nationally ranked pairing of Sara Nayar and Monica Malinen from Colorado, Sosnowska and Bland advanced to the championship with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory. Sosnowska and Bland picked up their fifth win of the tournament and are now a team-best 7-1 as a tandem this fall.

Tomasetti took on Utah's Madison Tattini in the semifinal match between two of the top five seeds. As she had in the previously three days, Tomasetti did not drop a set in dispatching Tattini, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to her second consecutive regional championship match.

As a team, the Lumberjacks went 3-3 in singles competition on Saturday with Sosnowska and junior Madi Moore capturing victories in extra matches. Sosnowska took down Colorado's Antonia Balzert, 6-1, 6-3, while Moore defeated Hsuan-Yu Lin of UNLV, 6-1, 6-2. For Moore, the victory was her first of the fall.

The Lumberjacks' trio will play in their respective championship matches at 9 a.m. Sunday morning. Tomasetti will square off against Colorado's Nayar, ranked No. 65 and seeded fourth, in her bid for a second straight Mountain Regional title.

In the doubles championship match, Sosnowska and Bland will face UNLV's En-Pei Huang and Izumi Asano on their home court. The matchup will be the second between the two pairings this fall with the Rebels' tandem picking up an 8-3 victory last month in the semifinals of the UNLV Fall Invitational.
