Lumberjacks in Second After 36 Holes

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (October 8, 2019) - The Northern Arizona women's golf team is in second-place after shooting 12-over during the second round of play at the NM State Aggie Invitational hosted by New Mexico State at the NM State Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Lumberjacks (+20, 596) currently hold a four-stroke spread between them and the third-place teams, South Dakota State and UTEP (+24, 600), heading into the final round. The course proved to be a challenge through the first 36 holes, ensuring that every team was over par after the conclusion of the first two rounds. Host New Mexico State (+1, 577) sits in first after a seven-under (281) team showing in the second round.

Sophomore Elle Kocourkova led the 'Jacks through day two. After ending the first round in a tie for first-place on the player leaderboard, Kocourkova was just one-over par in the second round putting her in a four-way tie for third-place (-1, 143). Kocourkova is only two stokes behind the leader, Audrey Haddad of UTEP (-3, 141). If Kocourkova can power through the final round with the same type of performance that she put on during the first two days, she could leave the Land of Enchantment with her best collegiate tournament finish yet. She swung for two birdies on the day on Holes No. 15 and No. 17.

Fellow Sophomore Ashley Croft finished the day at three-over, 75, to match her performance from yesterday in round one. Croft is currently in an eight-way tie for 15th-place. 

Aleksandra Chekalina saw a huge improvement in the second round. After going five-over in the opening round, the sophomore bounced back to a two-over showing in the second round. She now sits at seven-over (151) and is in a tie for 23rd-place. Chekalina birdied on three holes in the second round (Holes No. 8, No. 14 and No. 15).

Seniors Emma Reyes (+9, 153) and Morgan Messick (+14, 158) rounded out the scoring for the 'Jacks, finishing the day tied for 33rd and 65th respectively.

Freshman Alyza Flores (+9, 153) is also in a tie for 33rd-place despite competing unattached to the 'Jacks. Junior Sara Padilla (+13, 157) is also golfing unattached and saw a big increase in play after going five-over in the second round, a three-stoke improvement from day one. She is in a tie for 56th-place.

The final round of the NM State Aggie Invitational starts tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. (MST) with a shotgun start.
