FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (November 5, 2019) – For the first time in program history, the Northern Arizona women's tennis team will have entries in both the singles and doubles draw at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, slated to start in Newport Beach, Calif. on Wednesday. The fall season-ending championships, in its third year, will run through Sunday.
Senior
Chiara Tomasetti will compete in the singles draw for the second consecutive year after repeating as the Mountain Regional champion. Tomasetti posted six straight set wins at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships two weeks ago to automatically qualify for this week's National Fall Championships.
Tomasetti, the No. 71 ranked player in the country, knocked off No. 65 Sara Nayar of Colorado in the final to earn her second consecutive regional title. This fall, Tomasetti holds a 12-3 singles record and she has won two of three matches against fellow nationally-ranked opponents. In addition to Nayar, Tomasetti also defeated No. 63 Iuliia Bryzgalova of Pennsylvania at the Oracle ITA Masters.
Last season, Tomasetti went 1-2 at the National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz. Both of Tomasetti's losses came to nationally-ranked players.
While Tomasetti gained automatic entry into the National Fall Championships, sophomore
Adrianna Sosnowska and freshman
Mimi Bland earned a well-deserved at-large selection into the doubles draw. Sosnowska and Bland finished second at the regional championships, falling to UNLV's En-Pei Huang and Izumi Asano in the final match.
On their way to the finals, Sosnowska and Bland knocked off a pair of Pac-12 duos in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively. Their most impressive victory came in the semifinals against Colorado's No. 53 ranked tandem of Nayar and Monica Malinen. Overall this fall, Sosnowska and Bland is a team-best 9-2 in doubles play.
All of this week's competition on the women's side will be contested at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
