FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (December 17, 2019) – A pair of Northern Arizona wide receivers – sophomore
Brandon Porter and freshman
Hendrix Johnson – hauled in their first career All-American honors on Tuesday in an announcement by HERO Sports. Porter landed on HERO Sports' 2019 FCS Sophomore All-America Team, while Johnson garnered honorable mention distinction on the FCS Freshman All-America Team.
Porter, an All-Big Sky Second Team honoree this season, paced the Lumberjacks in receiving with team-highs of 85 receptions, 1,198 yards and 10 touchdowns. Porter's 85 receptions set a new NAU single season record and his 1,198 yards were the second-highest single season total – just 10 yards off the program record.
Porter ranked in the top 10 nationally in receiving yards (eighth) and receptions per game (7.1 – eighth) and receiving yards per game (99.8 – 10th). Additionally his 10 receiving touchdowns place him 23rd nationally. He averaged 14.1 yards per reception.
He recorded six or more receptions in 10 of 12 games and had six games with 100 receiving yards or more. Porter logged four games with multiple receiving touchdowns and for good measure also added a 55-yard touchdown pass. He ranked second on the team with 1,230 all-purpose yards.
Johnson made an immediate impact in his freshman season, setting an NAU freshman record with 828 receiving yards – which placed him third on the team in 2019. Johnson's 60 receptions were only eclipsed by Porter this season and he finished his debut season with five receiving touchdowns and 13.8 yards per reception.
He completed his season with the fourth-most receiving yards by a freshman in the FCS this season while leading all freshmen in receptions. Johnson ranked in the top 70 nationally in the FCS in receiving yards, receptions per game (5.0) and receiving yards per game (69.0).
Johnson, who was named to the STATS Jerry Rice Award watch list earlier this season, closed the year strong with five or more receptions in each of his last five games and he posted five or more receptions in eight games total. He posted a pair of 100-yard performances and registered a season-best two touchdowns on the road against Weber State – one of four FCS semifinalists.
